Ford 9" - bolt pattern

So i'm looking at getting a ford 9" for my next project. I plan to run a mustang II setup up front and have the option of either a 4-1/2 or 4-3/4 bolt pattern.

So the first question is, what bolt pattern is going to give me a better selection of wheels?

Then, when i go to find a rear, do i need to look for a particular rear? Maybe from a car instead of a truck? or vice versa?

Re: Ford 9" - bolt pattern

truck rears are 5X5.5boltpattern for the most part/ so you'd need to have axels drilled and new drums if you want to match patterns front and rear// both 41/2 and 43/4 patterns have large selections of wheels so i dont think that's an issue// you can find some lincolon rears late80's-90's??? have disc brakes

Re: Ford 9" - bolt pattern

Big Ford & Lincoln cars from the 70's have the right width 9" rears, but they are 5x5. Can you get the front in a 5x5?

Re: Ford 9" - bolt pattern

I have a 9" that has 5x4.5 & it came out of like a 84 F-150, so they are out there
And when I was going to put it under a ex project 67 short fleet & it had my wheels perfectly centered in the fender wheels

And I have a set of Dodge charger base model wheels & they bolt on fine, so I think that the 5x4.5 pattern would be pretty common
Technically the Dodge wheels are 5x114.3mm, but that translates to 4.5"

Re: Ford 9" - bolt pattern

5x4.75 IMO gives you much more wheels to choose from.

Re: Ford 9" - bolt pattern

i'd rather not get the rear axles redrilled if possible, but i want a matching set of wheels.

it sounds like 5x4.5 is what i should look for?

Re: Ford 9" - bolt pattern

Late 60's early 70's cars had a smaller bolt pattern and I think its 5 on 4.5. Those are only 28 spline axles though so they are not as strong. Only a problem if you plan big horsepower.
