wanting to dye carpet

I would like to dye the carpet in my truck its not in bad shape its just sun-faded does anyone have any tips or advice i dont have the money for replacement carpet at the moment thanks, Daniel

I have done it, with mixed success. Last one was a color change and it was soso. I took the carpet out, cleaned it as best as I could and mixed RIT dye in a pump up sprayer and soaked it on a hot day on the drive. I was trying to go from a funky tan/orange to black and ended up with a really rich coffee color, but was satisfied for now. If you are staying the same color I would go for it.

well i guess ill wait to come up with the money im wanting to go from burgandy/faded orange to black and i could buy two carpets for the price of a dying kit. thanks for the input.

How do I know if i have a small or large center hump if its 4 wheel drive is it the bigger one? this is my first old chevy lol

You should have a high hump if it's an original 4x4. If the cab has been swapped before, it could possibly have a low hump. A low hump is only like a couple inches higher than the rest of the floor, whereas a high hump is really high, probably 8 inches taller or more than the rest of the floor. Trevor

I did a carpet in my old chevelle. It was black but sun faded to a almost redish color. I just pulled the front seats out, vaccumed it up and used a spray dye i found at kragen. What a difference. I would think going from orange to black would be pretty easy but you can get carpet kits on ebay for just ovver $100. THe stuff I used as alot less.

Kragen auto parts. It`s a chain store. I thought they were everywhere. I want to say the product was from duplicolor.

I just did it in my Mustang, I just went to the store bought some Rite dye and mixed it up in a 5 gallon bucket with hot water and blotted the carpet in the faded areas with a rag soaked in the dye, making sure I did not get the carpet to wet, then let the carpet dry, then cleaned the carpet again with warm soapy water to get the extra dye off. It worked very well, can barely tell the areas that I dyed.

I'm planning on doing the same thing for the carpet in my '73. I scored a decent shape red carpet. I'm going to dye it with Duplicolor black, like I've done with the dash, interior trim pieces and the door panels. I hope it works.

BTW, Kragen's is also known as Checker or Schuck's Auto parts. Depends on where you are in the country. Over here we have Checkers.

ok here is a question I can answer with my experience, as a reconditioning used car tech!!! first an foremost you want to simplify your color, blue, red, black, not sure what color you have but most GMs for these were pretty basic!!! If your not sure see your local auto parts store they WILL have a color chart. Next clean the carpet as best as possible, as in get as much dirt an grime out as commonly possible, using an carpet foam should do the trick, I prefer a citrus based formula. While the carpet is STILL wet spray a uniform coat over your carpet, just like painting light first coat maybe a little heavier if it needs a second coat, then let it air dry. Once dry take a carpet brush, no metal bristle whitewall brush, a plastic flexible bristle brush an scrub your carpet, or you can just use a good terry towel, do this so it doesn't have the hazed look, if you want you color to pop more reapply an rescrub your carpet. I will warn you, dying carpets is only a temporary fix over time normal wear an tear will remove the dye, so make sure this is something you WANT done, once done can't be removed!!! I usually try to use a carpet extractor WITH heat on my stuff, a little dull is tolerable, a really clean carpet is what usually gets most peoples attention!!!! Just my 2 cents, hope it helps
