59 Apache, should I use a S-10 frame
People have told me it is easier to put the 59 Apache body on a new truck frame than to fix up the old one and adding disk brakes, new engine ect. I am not into welding up a new frame and I do not trust my welding to be patching a frame. Can I get a 1986 s-10 take the cab and box off, and a few spacers to the frame and drop a 59 Apache cab and box on it?

Re: 59 Apache, should I use a S-10 frame
Welcome to the board. Use search in the top tool bar, type in S-10 swap and start reading. Or scroll down, I think there are at least 4-6 active s-10 swap question threads going at this time on the first two pages. Short answer is it depends on what you want to final truck to be. If you want to lower it much S-10 is not good, the cab rides high on the frame and it can't be lowered much. Then the choices become clip or IFS. There are lots of threads on that too, variables are your skill level and dollars.

My guess is that the S-10 is too narrow in terms of flange to flange measurement. Most guys go with a MII or 2nd gen Camaro/Trans Am subframe as these are closer to the stock flange to flange width.

I say use the camaro/nova subframe swap..you can do all the fab, and then just hire a professional welder to finish it up.
would be much cheaper and easie than re fabbing all your cab and bed mounts to a new frame |

An S-10 frame is going to be too narrow for a TF truck.

S10 is way to narrow. 58-59 you can use a C10 and it will look ok.
Down at the bottom of this page is a 59 with an 82 C10 http://www.hollisterroad.com/photo.htm Last edited by dwcsr; 03-17-2009 at 09:37 PM. |

Re: 59 Apache, should I use a S-10 frame
Go to about page 6 and see the thread "Late model car suspension on old truck..."
This guy has a front subframe you bolt into existing holes then weld the edges for strength. Uses mostly g-body suspension pieces. One of the easiest and price-efficient setups I have seen. Has the radiator mounts and engine mounts already in position if you wish. I only wish I had seen it before I did my trans am clip - I would certainly have gone with his setup. Sorta like the one from R.B.'s Obsolete just much cheaper!! |
