Picture of your 1950 VIN Plate?
Does anyone have a picture of their 1950 truck VIN plate? I'm not sure if '47-'54 are the same.
I believe the attached is accurate, but I'd like to see the font of the VIN numbers/ letters to replicate my trashed VIN tag. Mine is rusted and I'd like to replace it after paint. |

I would recommend contacting your DMV before doing anything. Some states consider removing or altering the vin plate a felony. There are usually ways to do this that are legal. Check their website first.
Also, does your state use the engine serial number or the i.d. plate as the vin? They are different.

Mine is beat up, ugly and has about three coats of paint on it. At least it did the last time I saw it in a box of stuff off the truck. Previous owners of the truck weren't too kind to the plate and didn't mask it off when they painted it.

I bought mine (53 GMC which I think is different than Chevy) from jim carters. I bought a cheap number/letter punch set from Ebay. Same font as my old tag. If you ship it back, I'll send you the punch kit to use. PM me with your address when your ready and I'll send it to you.

Re: Picture of your 1950 VIN Plate?
The straight numbers are it's position in line in the plant that it was built in that year. Meaning that Bigblue29's truck was built in Janesville, is a 3100 series and was built in December and was the 572nd 3100 series truck down the Janesville line that year. Numbering started at 1001.
I picked up another set of number and letter stamps that I think might have the right font. The two other sets I have don't have the correct font or even close. I haven't got them out and played with the yet thought.

Re: Picture of your 1950 VIN Plate?
My 1950 California registered truck used the motor number on the title. That id plate is only held on with a couple of screws so not a good way to ID the truck if it were stolen or something.

so what does the 1 in his vin indicate? Or maybe you just didn't see it. Easily done.

The VIN on my '50 looks just like Bigblue29's.

Re: Picture of your 1950 VIN Plate?
There may be variation on the stamping depending on the factory. Here is a pic of my 1950's tag.
This is not a "Vin" tag. They were body serial numbers. Some states used the serial number and some used the engine number for titles and registration. "Vin" numbers weren't used until 1954 and then were standardized in to the current 17 character system until later. Compare your title and make sure your truck was titled by the serial number. If it was by the engine and you don't have the original engine you will have no numbers matching the title.

Re: Picture of your 1950 VIN Plate?
Wondered about that being a body tag because that's what my Model A has. The truck I have was a dealers personal truck. He's very old now and lost all the paper work. He said it was never titled because he always had dealer plates. I hope I can sort this out without a lot of red tape. What do I file for a title or certificate of origin???

Re: Picture of your 1950 VIN Plate?
Sounds like bonded title time. I bought a 50 GMC firetruck that had never been titled. Thats what I ended up having to do. Not a big deal, but get the bonded title before doing any expensive work to it. Good luck. Jim
