NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
Title says most of it, bought an aluminum cover for the 468bbc and now it hits the cam button. It is a roller bearing cam button, it has 2 washers and the roller bearing. I took out the 2 washers and left the roller bearing but it still hits by about 1/8'' to 3/16''. Do I grind the cam button down, if so how in the world would I keep it sqaure. Really cant mill the cover down? Wanted to slap this back together tonight if anyone here can help
thanks

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
You can bang out the cover. Use an object of a similar size and dimple the cover in that area. I had to do this with mine.
Don't grind down the button.

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
I wouldn't think you could dimple an aluminum cover. I also doubt the cover is thick enough to grind that much out. I wish I knew the answer.

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
The cover is a polished cast aluminum one, it is way to thick to bang out. Had another board member say to grind it? Thought that was the route I was going in the morning BUT????????????

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
Vince, I dont think the cover is thick enough to grind 3/16'', plus with this being a roller cam it will push against the cover, cant afford to make it to thin and have the cover crack? Really want to grind it but on the same hand dont want to mess anything up by doing that either. Maybe I can run the button up to a friends house tomorrow and have him cut the button down on his lathe???

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
I would think something is keeping the cam from going all the way in. I have never had this problem and I have run a bunch of different cams and covers.

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
have you tried putting the distributor in? If the cam was too far forward I wouldn't think it would go in.

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
Since the buttons come in diiferent lengths I think I will just cut mine down to use with the cover I have. But before I do that I will install the dist. to make sure the cam is all the way back in the block. It appears to be since the gear drive is almost touching the block currently. Wish e luck here we go!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks guys

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
Wait a minute, that's a cloyes Quick-button cover. It's adjustable.
FIRST make sure the cam is seated against the cam plug, and that the cam plug is seated properly in the block. Take the allen head out of the center, use a large screwdriver and back the adjustable button all the way back. Install the cover with the gasket you'll be running, LIGHTLY adjust the cam button to contact the cam, lock it down and your done. The expansion of the cover gives you the 0.002" clearance Cloyes wants after warm-up. If you can't adjust it that way, you have the wrong timing set, (they are intended for the Hex-adjust timing set), or the cam is not seated in the block corectly. Plain and simple, something is not right and don't make your problem worse by grinding on ANYTHING.

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
Oh, another word of advice, before the heads go on... install the harmonic dampner, use a piston stop and set that Tavia adjustable timing pointer. It's a MAJOR PITA to do after the motor is assembeled. Set it' put it up out of the way till you are ready to assemble.
You've got some nice pieces there,,, work slowly and carefully and you'll have a first rate assembly,,, rush through it blindly and agaist the instructions and you may be far from satisfied with the results.

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
Sorry Marv for not getting back to you sooner, but the Cloyes cover shown was not mine someone else posted that pic. My aluminum cover was a generic polished cover. I made sure the cam was all the way in the block and ground the cam button down until it barely touch the cover. I did not leave any play becasue everyone says the cover will allow movement once the motor is warm. Don't really know if I did the right thing but it seemed correct since they do offer differnt length buttons.
Thanks for the advice guys

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
LMAO, that's what I get for not paying attention eh!
You did exacly what I've always done on the 'fixed' buttons,, trim the buton to fit the cover, not the other way around.

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
Awsome, you had me nervous there for a minute. I would ask more questions about this timing thing you talked about but I do not have my heads off, I was just planning on putting the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke then dropping in the dist. pointing toward #1 cylinder, hope that is correct
thanks alot Marv

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
Hey guys, truck was finally put back together a couple weeks ago and even made it to the Indy 4x4 Jamboree, but I now have a pretty big oil leak front the front of the motor. After some heiatation I decided today to pull the motror back out of the truck and see if I can figure this leak out.
RESULTS - WELL, they are kind of inconclusive. The Felpro One Piece rubber oil pan gasket appears to have torn in places along the front and rear edge ?? Has anyone ever saw this? It doesn't seem like it would make it leak but maybe it would. Also I wwent to change the front seal out of the timing chain cover and I can actually pull the seal out with my hand?? This doesn't seem right at all, normally you have to beat them out. Also with this aftermarket aluminum cover the seal does not sit 100% flush with the outside of the cover, but when I look at the JEGS catalog I notice the same thing, the seal actually bottoms out on the inside flange of the cover before it is flush. Maybe this is the problem?? I am now debating on ordering the CLOYES two piece timing chain cover in hopes it might provide tighter seal tolerances?? FRANKS 72 - Did your seal sit flush?? I do onot want this thing to leak AGAIN I will try and post some pics of the Felpro gasket

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
I do have a new damper, it is a Professional Products Brand Damper. I was wondering if the damper tolerance is a little off because the damper is not that tight of a fit around the seal?? Maybe it should be that way?
How can you tell my cam is walking?? I have a roller bearing thrush washer (or whatever its called) between the cam and the cover?

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
the seal not fitting tight in the cover will leak like crazy and look like the pan seal leaking. the seal should fit good to the balancer. the spring in the seal provides the required tension to keep its sealed to the balancer. what brand is that timing cover? some of the chinese parts leave a bit to be desired in the fitment category

Re: NEED HELP!! Cam button vs Aluminum Cover
Not sure the brand on the cover itself, but it appears to be the exact one as the Summit/Jegs Brand coveer. I am still considering a Cloyes cover? Thoughts ??
It does not appear the seal is that tight around the damper, but that is very questionable? I understand it cant be to tight because the crank spins obviously, but where is that point of tight vs. loose. Anybody else running these Professional Products dampers??
