help with the motor build

so i want to build a small block for my truck but im torn between a 355 and 383. I have an 010 block im gonna start with but I dont know the displacement i wanna go with. I have an 1182 crank so that would save me some money just to go with the 355. what im going for is pretty much the wildest motor i can still drive on the street without too much trouble. its gonna be all forged bottom end and aluminum heads for sure. but my biggest problem is deciding what cam/intake to use. i was thinking maybe a tunnel ram and a big cam for the 355 and make it a real top end monster. or go with the 383 with a good dual plane and a little milder cam, but the problem there is cost. so if you guys could tell me some good set-ups for what im looking for or some constuctive critisism on my ideas anything will help. thanks

ps: i want to build it to handle nitrous and maybe a blower someday but probably not both so im gonna go fairly low compression

You need to decide first if you actually are going to use a power adder eventually and decide which one before you do anything. If you want a blower motor you need lower compression and a cam with little overlap. If you want to spray it, you want compression. Both require different gaps on the rings as well. Think everything through before you buy anything.

I have decided on 355 CID forged bottom end and nitrtous. so im planning on going 9-10:1 compression, aluminum heads 210cc 2.02 1.60, edelbrock RPM or single plane manifold, comp thumpr hyd roller cam 2500-6200 .533 .519 lift. and a holley 750. i was gonna run a 150 shot. any constructive critisism on this build? anything you would change? any input is very much appreciated.


PS: im running 3.73's for sure and probably 2800-3000 stall (to be decided when i figure the motor out) its a turbo 350

Stay closer to 10:1 than 9:1 with those heads/cam.....and nitrous loves compression. Start out with plugs 2-3 steps colder than stock and start out with 28-29 degrees timing on the jug and tune up from there. If you're going to run a plate kit, single plane intakes generally distribute better but it can sure be done with a dual plane too.

so.... i happened across a all forged 383 balanced rotating assembly that im getting for my birthday. so now im going that way, but all the rest will be the same. I CANT WAIT!!! its a long story how i got it but i did so im not complaining.

so i have revised my motor to this:
383 forged crank
h beam forged rods
forged pistons 10.1:1 CR
210 cc heads 2.02 1.60 valves
comp thumpr hyd roller cam
2500-6200 .533 .519 lift 243/257 dur
or
xtreme energy hyd roller
2500 to 6000 .520/.540 lift 236/242 dur
aluminum roller rockers
valve springs good to .550 lift
rocker stud girdle
victor jr. or simmilar single plane
150 shot of fun juice
750 dominator or 4150 hp
MSD distributer and 6al ignition
im gonna run it through my dyno program right now so ill post how it turns out.

You have a little conflict there, you need 0.050" off coil bind to keep the locks and retainers alive. With springs good to .550 your limited to .500 lift. Don't know what heads you found that are 210 cc and only a 2.02 intake. Heck even a well flowing 195cc head will use a 2.08 intake valve and 1.55 roller springs good to .60" or .650" lift. Sounds to me like you have a bargian basement head picked out and it's unlikely it will fulfill the target of the rest of the package... but that's just an observation from this side of the fence.

I've ran a couple of 750 dominators (one myself and one on a motor I built for a friend) and all I can say is you better schedule some dyno time to get it dialed in on that small of a motor. With Prosystems now offering 1000cfm 4150's,, I'd sure think along those terms until your on a level that requires a 1000cfm. Then Patrick can build a 950-1300cfm dominator that will keep you in the meat of the target A/F ratio from idle through stabbing the throttle to WFO.

I try to preach to everyone that HEADS is here the power is made, and heads should be the major part of your budget. When your looking for all out effort motors heads and valve train components will EASILY be 1/2 of your budget. Not that you should just blindly toss $'s at a really expensive set of heads,,, just that when it's all said and done,,,, you'll find that about 1/2 of your parts budget went for heads, cam and valve train.

alright i will consider your advice and do some more research on heads. I have been hearing this a lot and i think im gonna ditch the bargain heads and work some more overtime for some thing with a little more quality. maybe if im lucky i can find a slightly used set still in good shape for cheap on ebay or racingjunk.com. do you think i will need a bigger than 2.02 valve for this application? I've been considering some trick flows or something simmilar. is it worth the extra $$ to get the CNC ported ones? the intake im looking at is port matched to a fel pro so it would be kind of a waste to not match the heads as well. want all out performance but im gonna still drive it on the street so i cant go TOO radical.

Make sure you get pistons and rings setup for nitrous.
If this is going to be a regular driver then I would perhaps look for a slightly smaller head, 195cc. But like Marv said the money should be spent on heads.

Where are you getting the short block from?

its a really long story how i got them but my mom's ex boyfriend is buying me a rotating assembly. and i have a virgin 010 block im gonna use. i was looking at the eagle one with forged crank, h beam rods, and forged pistons. i was gonna upgrade the rings and rod bolts, which they claim ill be good to 1100hp, which i think will be enough . Im not gonna drive it every day by any means, its gonna be for nice sunny weekend cruises, getting out some frustration, and the ocassional drag race. so its not a daily driver at all so im leaning much toward performance but i dont want something that is a real pain in the rectum to drive on the street
