Timing Help
Does anyone know the degree a 454 should be timed to? tried looking it up before and i read 10 degrees 0 degrees 16 degrees. before i messed with the timing the carburator would just pop and backfire. then this weekend we tried timing it and the popping went away but it ran like crap and i think we had it around 16 degrees.

I believe the best method of timing considering todays fuel is to first always buy the same octane fuel then you will want to adjust your timing to be as advanced as possible without predetonation (ping). This may take some time/experimentation/adjustments to get it right. (Assuming you have an HEI/electronic ignition, you won't have to be concerned with points, dwell, etc.). When you learn what that timing is, write it down and use it for future reference.

Start with 10 degrees before and see how it runs. What kind of a distributor do you have? I always buy an advance spring kit and use the medium springs for a street engine. vacuum advance hooked to ported vacuum so the vacuum advance goes away at idle. This is a good starting point.

first thing in timing a motor is to make sure the balancer and timing marks are in the correct position

Ugh, I would take it to a decent auto mechanic shop and have them get it fired and running decent. You never know whats going on if you don't have the right tools to diagnois the issues.

Looks like you have the HEI Dizzy everyone is talking about here, which is a good thing.
But what pops out to me is an open vacuum port on your carb. Maybe it plugs into something once you put on your air cleaner but its just what I see. I circled it in red that might be one place you want to fix before messing with the timing.

i replaced the afb with an edelbrock from a junkyard i found it and got it for free and i have that vaccum line running to the valve cover.. i think the best me and my uncle will do is just keep the timing light on it and messs with the distributor until we can get it running good the only thing that i noticed was the idle was really weird cuz everytime the line would come around it would be at a different spot...i didnt know if that was normal or i have an off idle
