Any one using Air over Shocks on their IFS?

I have a frame for my 1950 3100 that has a mustang ii front suspension that is setup for tall coilovers. I plan to bag the truck to lay the running boards close to the ground. With the way the frame is setup up now, it would be easiest to just use a set of air over shocks, like shockwaves, instead of cutting the upper coil over mount off/trimming the bracing on the side of the frame and rebracing and mounting normal upper bag brackets. My only concern is that due to limited spacing of how the crossmember/coilover upper mount was braced, I would have to go with a sleeve design air over spring and from what i have researched they only have about 900lb load capacity. Would i be better off just cutting up the upper mount/trimming the bracing on the side of the frame and rebracing or will this load capicty be sufficient? I also plan on switching to the control arms that don't require the strut rod.

Thanks,

Re: Any one using Air over Shocks on their IFS?

I just replaced my coil overs with a set of shock waves. (actually a set of varishocks which use ART parts) I had to change the upper mount and move it out about an inch. I found these on ebay for $450 for the set. If space is a problem they can be put in upside down. Mine were 13" ride height.

I don't think you can use the sleeve type for the front end.

There was a guy on the Air Ride Technologies forum that was doing the same thing with a similar looking suspension. I believe that it was a Fatman Fab. suspension. Fatman used a specific shockwave for their suspension. You may want to check with your font end manufacturer to see if it's a simple switch or you have to do "modifications".

At this point I guess I am more inclined to just pull out the plasma cutter and do the modifications. I can get it done in a day with the help of a buddy and it will be cheaper than spending the money on the shockwaves. Below is my plan where to cut. I will round out the top around the upper control arm mount and box the entire area. I will then weld in some upper bag mounts, but i am going to wait to do that until i get my new lower'upper arms and bags so i can get the dimensions exact.

a set of sleeved Shockwaves would not lift that front end up... you would need to stick with the 1000 series Shockwaves. Actually in that front end, you may be able to run them upside down and not have any clearance issues. You Could even use the SKW1054SA-PRO. That is going to have a 13" denter eye to center eye ride height measurement and the ports are drilled on the bottom end plate (which becomes your top plate when installed upside down). That unit was built specifically for Progressive Automotives front crossmember.

I moved your post to the suspension forum. I think you will get a more accurate response here as several of the industry pro's frequent this forum.
