Stepside tail lights - mock up
Just got the 'front' of the C-10 out in the driveway, so there's room in the garage to play now...
I'm looking for comments on this mock up of the lights I plan to install on my stepside bed. It's really just going to be a piece of sheet metal "wrapped" around the existing stake side. My goals are to have a really 'smooth' rear, 4 LED lights, nothing in the roll pan or the fenders. The gate and pan are from MAR-K. The pan needs about a 2" notch in the rear crossmember to fit correctly, not there yet. The light in the pic is a $7.00 NAPA incandecent, but I've found a few that look just like this but with LEDs and they're only 1" deep (and about $30 each). Thanks,

You might want to try some tail lights from a 65-ish chevy fleetside. They are about the same size and would fit flush

How about the caddy lights that most the guys put on the newer trucks. Im thinking about putting a set on the suburban.

I like the idea. It'd definitely be different. As for me, I chose to do a 1"X8" flush mounted l.e.d. where you're putting those. I too have a mar-k gate and pan. I did find it a little strange that you have to notch for the pan. Mine was a straight weld up job...no fitting nessessary. i did, however, have to notch one of the crossmembers for my gas tank. Dude, I'm sayin' go for it! Great, and reletively inexpensive!

Looks like what I'm planning to do, except I'm gonna use the stock fleetside tails. Can you get a better (daytime) pic?

Folks,
Thanks for the ideas. I haven't decided on the style of tail light yet, but you all gave some good options. Here's another take, with a 1"X8" on the pass. side. This time I cut the crossmember, so the pan fits right. Had to cut because of the license plate box. I'm still working on the electric latches that fit inside the top of the gate.

I like the creativity you're putting into it. I'm not sure that I like the idea of widening the rear profile though. Maybe after we get some of those Pshop ideas posted... Kenneth

I hope this shows it a little better. Yes, I'm trying to box in the stake thingie. Mainly, I didn't like the ridge of metal that stuck out on both sides of the gate. I did not want to just chop them, so I plan to start there, wrap around the outside and on the front side, tie in to the existing stake.
Over all, the stake only gets about 1 1/4" wider on each side, and the thickness of the side of the gate on the rear. But it does give me the look that I want. Plus room for a number of options in tail and backup lights. I hope I can contour the sheet metal to look similar to the original stake pocket, narrower at the top, slightly wider at the lower middle, and tapering at the bottom. Happy New Year (at least it is here on the East Coast!)

Hey, how about comming all the way down and follow the contour of the roll pan then box that in with the rest. Just a thought. I like it so far.
