mini starter installed...loud noise now
Just had my mechanic install my exhaust and Skip White mini starter...
Good news - 2.5" exhaust sounds great and looks awesome Bad news - mini starter is loud as can be - doesn't sound right to me How are they supposed to sound? It sounds like it is holding the crank a bit too long... |

Re: mini starter installed...loud noise now
Is it noise from the reduction gears or noise from the starter and ring gear?
I think those are universally noisy no matter who sells them. |

Re: mini starter installed...loud noise now
ministarters should b shimmed for the same 1/8clearance as regular starters

Aftermarket ministarters are universaly loud or sound like the gears or grinding or schreeching. Look to see if the starting gear is engaging fully on the flywheel or flexplate. Every mini starter I've put on my trucks (3 times) has been loud or the gear just doesn't extend far enough. Cdowns, yes I shimmed everyone of them to 1/8th of an inch

Re: mini starter installed...loud noise now
OK. took it back and they added a few more shims...sounds a lot better now. quick start.
now when driving I get a 'ting ting' metal on metal sound when you hit the gas. I don't get that noise in park only when driving... any ideas? sorry for the crappy format - I am typing on my work phone. |

Re: mini starter installed...loud noise now
That sounds like you are having a pre ignition ping. Check your total timing with vacuum advance disconnected. You may also try to disconnect vacuum advance and take it for a spin and see if it still does it. If it does not you need a adjustable vacuum advance.

Re: mini starter installed...loud noise now
I guess I should clarify - here are the symptoms
When I first heard the truck start = loud noise - no metal banging noise when hitting the gas Took it back - they shimmed it - sounds more normal starting - when driving the truck on the road metal banging noise is present when hitting the accelerator...when revving the motor in park - no metal banging noise. Took it back again - they added another shim - no metal noise when revving in park - when driving metal banging noise is present... It sounds like a hammer hitting metal - like it might be the flexplate banging on something. I went out and got some pix this morning - I can see debris on the starter - so it looks like the starter is hitting the flexplate when driving...great. I might clean it off and go for a spin and see if it comes back - that will really let me know - if it is still happening or from when they didn't have the starter shimmed right the first time. I also noted a new oil leak from the spark plug area - tell me this is an easy fix... |

Re: mini starter installed...loud noise now
I will also add some pix of the new exhaust system. Old setup was manifold to a spare set of exhaust with mufflers that just dangled under the truck...did the job - but didn't sound that great...
New system: 2.5" center dump manifolds 2.5" aluminized exhaust tube Flowsound 2.5" mufflers |

Re: mini starter installed...loud noise now
milky oil - nope - might be from the GUNK engine cleaner that was still on the block.
I had to find out where the leak was coming from so I doused the block so I could find the source... don't scare me like that.. My next question - if it turns out to be the flexplate - my trans guy is 40 miles away - I doubt it would be safe to drive it that far to have it looked at right...I might be screwed here as I don't have a trailer to get it there - I would need to drive it. Also - why would the banging happen only in D and not at idle or revving in park? Last edited by lks dcvn; 05-31-2009 at 11:18 AM. |

Re: mini starter installed...loud noise now
Thats a good looking truck.
Inspect the flexplate for scuff marks where it may have contacted the starter while you were driving. You can do this with a good size screwdriver to turn the flexplate. Somtimes you may be able turn it with your hands and a good pair of gloves. There should be at least 1/16th of an inch between the starter gear and the flexplate. If there has been contact, the flexplate or ring gear may be warped or not properly installed. Observe the flexplate with the engine running. This would be the easiest way to see. Don't get under the truck while it's running. If it shows untrueness, the ring gear is bent or not properly installed. There maybe corrosion or dirt/grease build up on the crankshaft flange. Clean off the oil leakage to observe for any obvious defects such as cracks. This will also allow for a clear look were the leak is coming from after it has leaked again. Dan42 has a good eye, it looks kind of "milky" indicating the presense of water in the leak.

Re: mini starter installed...loud noise now
Flexplate has some damage on it - but not sure if that was before they shimmed it correctly...
After looking at another post - some people have taken a bit off the end of the drive gear to alleviate the issue... http://www.trifive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25045 Another post I found said that the flexplate was cupped (it was round but cupped so the teeth were too close for the new starter) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=273647 I did find an easy way to swap the flexplate w/o having to drop the complete trans... "Hi,the easy way to change the flex plate is,get some 4 inch long bolts, remove all the trans to block bolts and replace the bottom 2 bolts with the long bolts, remove drive shaft, and shifter, slide trans back on long bolts ,you probably wont have enough room to slide trans all the way back.,,after changing the plate, slide trans forward and rebolt." - taken from this link: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/mini...te-155405.html Looks like I have some work ahead of me... This thing will never be done and ready to hand off to my Dad... Last edited by lks dcvn; 05-31-2009 at 12:13 PM. Reason: forgot the pix... |
