Ok so I removed my bed today to put my shackles and hangers on only to find this!!!!

I have some calls in to some buddies who have some welders any other suggestions? im sure I need to brace it as well huh?

1. Stop driving it.
2. Get it squared up and weld it.
3. Add gussets over the weld.
4. Box it.
5. Go over the rest of your frame with a fine toothed comb.

Ok I gota guy coming to fix it this Thursday I emailed him the picts and he said no prob to weld it.Im gonna cut a pc of frame off my donor truck for more support.The good thing is I caught it before I got it running and this is the only spot in the frame thats bad.After talking to the previos owner he said he heard a strange noice one time when he loaded 2 pallets of stone in the back.DUHHHH its only a half ton and it had a 6 banger in it before.The guys not to bright wait come to think of it hes my wifes ex-husband yeah that explains it.

Its a 93 fleet short bed.I think it was like this before I just didnt catch it.It had a 6 cyl in it I have a 350 in it now I lowered the front with spindles and springs and took the bed off to do the rear when I caught it.Mind you those picts were with a bit of starin on the frame I didnt have the leaf spings in yet.I am keeping the jack stand under the frame until its all welded up.

Have it boxed while he's repairing it.

You mean a c-notch? Im only dropping the rear 4 inches with shackles and hangers

What they mean by 'boxing' the frame is to weld in steel plate to fully enclose the frame member along it's open side, which greatly improves the strength and overall structural integrity of the rails.

Another good thing to do is to bevel the crack before welding but also drill a small hole (~3/16") where the crack ends this will help prevent it from re-apearing after being welded.

Good plan,If your help is good at welding you can forget it after hes done.I made a short bed out of a long bed (mud truck) and I'm super hard on it.No cracks,no problems.Did the work myself.

The new weak point will be right next to the current crack. That's why you want to gusset and plate.

Well I might be in luck guys it just so happens Im taking my kids to stay with grandma this weekend in Houston I made a call to my buddy and he said I could use his mig. so in between then and now im gonna go take some frame portions off my donor truck and cut the top and bottum off and weld them on the inside and out plus bolt them as well im gonna use about an 10 inch portion and hopefully it will be all good.Since im pretty much dead in the water as of now i took some time to brush off the frame and spray a few cans of krylon on it.I only had 1 steel brush wheel gota get some more tom and finish up.Yeah this is a budget build as you can tell.

I am sure that your going to have to sand the area of the crack to metal before you weld it.

Yeah im gonna go after it with a grinder to weld on bare metal good thing its only spray paint and this wont be no show truck.

are you going to box the frame? I hope so, and remember. if you do and something is suppose to bolt on in that area. make sure you weld the bolts on before you box it up. or you will have a hell of a time trying to bolt it on without access. unless there is another way...?

Well I know its been awhile since my last post but have been going outa town almost every weekend since kids are outa school.I did manage after working and doing yard work to get a little bit of work done on the truck.I havent started the boxing yet but just trying to fix the frame.Heres a few picts granted im not the best welder in the world but im learning...

Are u using a 110 flux core welder on this? If so that's a huge no no.
You need a 220 welder for penetration
