header back exhaust kit
I am going to put a set of headers on my truck here in a few weeks and was thinking about using Hooker Headers header back exhaust kit. Does anyone have any experience installing one of these. Here is a link to the kit at Summit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HOK-16523HKR/
I am not worried about the actual install, just wondering about the fit and if any modifications to the kit will be needed. Thanks for any help or advice!

Re: header back exhaust kit
I was looking at some of those same kits. I need to do something as well to my 85. I still have the original cat and think it's the cause of my power issues. Think'n it's plugged.

Re: header back exhaust kit
Mine has the original cat as well. I was going to try and replace it with a piece of pipe but the remaining exhaust is rusted through in several places and about to fall apart.

Re: header back exhaust kit
I just put this system in my truck bolted up to a set of the Summit ceramic coated headers.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-89007/ The intermediate pipes fit well and flowed well with the frame. Only issue with them was the slip fit on the header flange had to be stretched out a fraction more than it was. Muffler fitting slipped right into the Thrush Super Turbos I bought. The tailpipes on the other hand took some tinkering to get working right. The shop I had welding them up had to make 2 extension pieces to get the hump centered over the axle. All in all the Dynomax isnt a bad setup, but those tailpipes would be frustrating if youre on a creeper working underneath the truck. I dont have any feedback on the hooker system, but figured I would throw out the Dynomax info in case you looked at it too. |

Re: header back exhaust kit
Thank for your feedback and yes i was looking at that system as well. How good is the fit with the Summit headers? In the pictures they have it looks like the passenger side collector is angled toward the ground a bit. Is that the case?

Re: header back exhaust kit
Honestly I didnt really notice any difference one I bolted them up. They sit a tad lower than the frame, like most headers. I can get some pics later if you want, nothing with the bed off but I can get a few low angle shots.

Re: header back exhaust kit
Here's what I got. You can see the extention pieces the muffler shop had to make behind the mufflers. It looks like both headers angle down about the same. Dont judge them by my suspension, the PO decided to lower the truck by torching the springs so the suspension is uneven.

Re: header back exhaust kit
Years ago I used the Hooker system you're looking at on my old 79 3/4 ton, mainly because I had Hooker headers . I believe they were 1 1/2 tubes with 2 1/2 collectors. The Hooker kit bolted up nice to those Hooker headers but they did not angle to the ground like the Summit headers. I know because I have summit headers on my truck now and i still have the old beast sitting out in the field! So my answer is yes the Hooker system will work great if you have the Hooker headers or maybe other headers that don't angle down like the Summit ones. Hope this helps!
