Re: Check those Lug Nuts

here is the pic, incase that link dies^...
this same thing happened to my dentist, almost killed him, and he dosen't work anymore, but I think he still owns the practice. A tire (spare they think) came off the back of an RV and hit him square in the middle of his chest while he was on his motorcycle. they never found the RV.

Unhappy Re: Check those Lug Nuts

Same thing happened to me once. I heard a thumping noise wile I was driving and couldn't figure out where it was coming from so I stopped along the side of the rode and had a tow truck pick me up so I wouldn't cause any damage to my truck. It wasn't a flat bed so while I was being towed the front tire came off and went bouncing down the freeway and over the center divider into oncoming traffic. I didn't see it come off but I did see it come bouncing back in the opposite direction. I never found out what it hit. After we secured my truck and continued down the freeway we didn't see any signs of it hitting anything. Thank God! I guess I found out what the thumping noise was.

Re: Check those Lug Nuts

Emergency personnel recovered the tire from the woods along the eastbound side of the interstate.

Maybe that's where the old saying about what the bear does in the woods came from - because he did for sure that day.

Mac.

Re: Check those Lug Nuts

After I bought my truck the rear wheels came loose. I at least heard them and got to them in time. After that I started to hear a bumping noise in the front end and it went away after stepping on the brakes. Seems like the last idiot did tighten the caliper brackets. One bolt almost fell out of the left side but all 4 were loose. This is why I don't take my car to midas, and just do the work myself. Plus I am too cheap to pay someone else to do it.

Re: Check those Lug Nuts

A similar situation just happened with the 65 burb I just bought. We were following it on the tow truck and seen all 5 lug nuts go flying. Luckily the wheel got stuck between the well and axle. We should have checked but we assumed everything was good. Lesson learned.

Re: Check those Lug Nuts

I enjoy the comments of the people on the link....talking about the barriers. They have obviously never seen one come off; I have!! Rolling home from work a few years ago I merged on to a 5-lane wide section of the freeway just in time to see a front tire come off a minivan, drivers front. The tire quickly crossed lanes doing roughly 60 mph where a fullsize Dodge Dewalt truck (all painted up black and yellow) smacked the tire going the same direction at 70 mph and shot that thing like a cannon ball!!!!!!! It maintained balance and was bouncing as high as the overpasses!!!! Im glad I was behind the whole thing....it eventually rolled off to the shoulder. I was thinking of it going thru someones windshield and that Crown Vic shows what would have happened. Wow.
