Fuel gauge wiring. problems
anyone have an idea what color wiring is coming up from the fuel sender to the dash on an 81. my fuel gauge buries when the key is on. I forget if that means totally grounded out or open circuit on a fuel gauge. I have to tackle one disaster at a time with this truck from the P/O . thanx , crossy

Re: Fuel gauge wiring. problems
I got it, but the ground could be any of THREE colors. ??
looks like pink for power and thats what #18 on the cluster connection was. #18 runs to the fuel gauge ,but so does #16 and #10 which are both grounds on the cluster. i thought fuel gauges were nothing but a meter/needle hooked to a resistor. I don't get the three wires with two being grounds? thanx ,crossy

Re: Fuel gauge wiring. problems
I found those schematics. One problem. i don't see a dual tank set up.
ANYWAY the idiot P/o removed the right tank. it uses only the left, but the switch inside cab was busted, one pink wire cut then it was shoved behind the dash. there is a Lt. green , Dk. green, pink & black wire running to the switch. ANYONE have an idea what it takes to bypass the switch. I still have no gauge at this point. My tank had the PURPLE ground wire and i removed it, cleaned , re-installed. No change in gauge even when removed. I then found the tan/white (not pink)power wire and the connector. no change when unplugged. hmmm . I REALLY need to know i have bypassed the switch right before i troubleshoot anything else. thanx, crossy

Re: Fuel gauge wiring. problems
well I havea working fuel gauge for the first time in ??? years. Too involved to explain, but i verified the sender was good with an ohmeter so i ran my own wire and spliced it in(correctly) to the 18 pin connector on the cluster.
THEN_ I found where the IPO had cut the pink wire. he used the fuse off the fuse box for the elestric fuel pump. I made things right. put fuel pump on a separate fused connection.
