Changing a vin plate

What it the "titled" part of a truck? Is it the Vin plate on the cab? Is it the frame? How can I legally change my cab to a Big Window cab? Can I drill out my Vin plate and out put it on a Big Window Cab?

Re: Changing a vin plate

I would call the DMV and/or state police headquarters, they should know. It may vary from state to state.

Re: Changing a vin plate

your vin should match the number on your frame.

but, yeah check with the local authorities. I believe the cab you are going to use will need a title also then they will consolidate the 2 numbers and give you a new title.

Re: Changing a vin plate

First, it is illegal to drill the rivets and swap the VIN plate to another cab without going through the legal process of documenting it with the state. Your state will have a procedure to do this. Different states have different procedures.

Re: Changing a vin plate

I see this thread being closed in the near future. Swapping vin plates is HIGHLY Illegal unless documented by a state official. Contact your Local DMV or State Trooper office to find out more.

I would not do anything mentioned by others in this thread unless it involves the Legal route.

Throwback and Skirkpat are right. It is illegal to swap VINs. What I posted should not be considered advice, just jibber jabber. Just sayin'.

Re: Changing a vin plate

Definately check with your local DMV. It may be required to involve the state police. Here in Maryland you do.

Re: Changing a vin plate

Those in the pic doesnt look like the rose bud rivets that 67-72 era trucks came with, I got lucky a few years ago and bought some on the board here because the body shop removed my tag without asking, talk to the DMV, they may be able to get you in the right direction, dont know if you plan on moving or how your state does inspections (if any) but some states will check the rivets to see if they have been replaced,,,,then its nothing but a headache after.....

the best thing to do when blasting is to cover it with a piece of duct tape, but I guess if there is rust behind it ,it would always bleed through. those look like the fasteners for the trim tag / data plate on the kick panel.
the vin rivets look more like a pop rivet on 456,on 60-63 I they are spot welded on, which create more re-attachment issues if they fall off.

In NC there is no inspection what so ever on vehicles older than 35 years old. No emissions test, no safety inspection, no nothing.

And yes, Squidbillies do indeed rule. They are in fact cooler'n'hell.

Re: Changing a vin plate

Well,,,
Speeking from my position (moving every 3+ years) sometimes I change titles from state to state, easier that way sometimes, I actually had the DMV inspect the vehicles, checking vins, checking frames climbing on my trucks to see if they were legit. Glad to here NC doesnt mess with 35+ year old vehicles as I have 3 of those. Hopefully its state wide and not by county. AZ does smog tests only in certain counties.

Cant wait to find the DVD seasons of squidbillies.....when they ever come available.

I think Seasons 1 & 2 are available now. New episodes from Season 3 are currently re-running on Adult Swim now.
