Noob needs some advice

I can pick this truck up for $2500 and it's a runner. What do you guys think?

1966 Chevy C-10 longbed pickup truck with the straight six cylinder engine, chrome valve cover, three speed manual transmission, new exhausts, 15” Unique black wheels, satin black paint, wood bed, and silver and black interior. Runs and drives! Pass side lower rear fender has been hit, no signs of frame or structure damage. Frame floors solid. Pass door has bondo with heavy sanding scratches. Wood bed is old and falling apart, needs to be redone. This was a daily driver, with new wheels and tires, alt. air filter starter and new exhaust.

I have been scowering craigs list for a couple of months and it's darn near impossible to find a runner for this price. Seems like a rear fender panel and repair or replace the door and she is good to go. It's already satin black which is where I was planning on going with it so that is a plus. Not worried about the bed as I also for see a step notch and bags.

I might have just talked my self into it, but I want to hear your feed back.

Re: Noob needs some advice

$2,500 for a straight six is a bit steep - especially with that nightmare wiring in the engine compartment. Body's fairly good, but I'd work'em on the price a bit.

I agree with Mac,

By the looks of the tags it looks to be at a car lot...there's a 10-15% mark up right there.
Looks to be no wood in the bed either (The Shadow Knows and Tells)

Re: Noob needs some advice

Seems to be a decent deal... I would try talking him down a bit... maybe $1800-$2k... Those sixes are good motors, very reliable. And that chrome v/c gives it another 10 hp, easy!

Re: Noob needs some advice

Cool thanks guys! He also has a 346 out of a 58 Impala that was running when they pulled it. I am trying to get him to throw that in also or maybe meet me halfway on it. Hopefully there will be a new ride in the drive this week.

That would be a 348 and would certainly sweeten the deal AND would be a great engine for that truck IMO.

Re: Noob needs some advice

Dang it! Turns out to be the Super Turbo Fire V-8 283.

Don't know much about these from what he tells me produces about 230 hp? Said it was rebuilt and then the guy decided to go with a LSX crate motor. Worth the swap or hold out and find a 350 some place?

Re: Noob needs some advice

It's always good to work on the price, but it sounds like a fair/reasonable deal. Not sure about your neck of the woods but $2500 doesn't buy much any more. Just make sure to check for rust in the usual places. The satin black paint looks good, but it could be hiding recent or poor rust repairs.

Re: Noob needs some advice

The 283 is cool and came in trucks of that year, if anything a 283 would excite me, not dissapoint. They were between 170-275 HP if i remember correctly.

Re: Noob needs some advice

Mine had the 175 hp 283 and it was an ok runner. I am sure the higher HP ones are even better.

Add the chrome breather cover and now we're talking 10 second 1/4 mile.
Chrome makes it go faster.
.
Seriously, I'd try to talk him down on the price.
Even with the v-8 probably a 2k truck.

Re: Noob needs some advice

All this negative opinions on inline 6's. Great engines. I put a 409 engine from a boat in my truck before I did all the work on it. The 348, basically the same engine fits nicely. The only modification I did was to indent the firewall on the passenger side to allow easy removal of the valve cover. Just have to move it a bit for clearance.

That 409 boat motor MAY be a truck engine. If so, it would have taller decks than a car engine by about 1/2" and may be why the firewall mod was necessary. Or maybe not.
