Incredible Shrinking Truck
Hi all, got a nice welcome on my first post... THANKS! I finally had the opportunity to get the '67 C10 project truck I bought off the trailer today. I climbed up on the trailer and got in and the GRIM REALITY is that my little truck doesn't fit. It's not far enough from the back of the seat to the bottom of the steering wheel. Guess the cab must've shrunk with age. Back about '90 or so I had a '68 C20 long bed for a beater and it was ROOMY. Guess a '68's bigger than a '67. I checked the search section for a cure and didn't see one. The truck's a turd that needs everything so maybe a shorter steering column? Maybe combined with moving the gas tank out of the cab.... smaller steering wheel? OR limit myself to about 1500 calories a day and by the time I sweated my way through building a hot rod truck I'd probably fit just fine. Suggestions and solutions will be greatly appreciated..... Thanks in advance.

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
I don't know much about any differences, if there are any, but my '67 has the seat back all the way and it seems to fit me perfect at about 5'7". I noticed that right away. I can't imagine being very tall or big and fitting too great, at least in a stock truck like mine! You might be on to something...

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
removing the tank won't do anything, the seat hits the wall underr the window, not the glass.

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
People were smaller in the late 60's, and luckily I'm 5"9", so I fit perfectly with the seat all the way back.
It's a bummer you don't fit, you wanna put that thing back on the trailer so I can pick it up? Last edited by slategrove; 07-29-2009 at 07:20 AM. |

Man that was almost 20 years ago! Cab size should be the same, but in-seam measurement tends to surpass waist size as we age -therefore reducing cab size space... Welcome!! |

I know I was a lot smaller in the late 60's..... I was looking at a '55 second series GMC at a show awhile back that belonged to a WHOPPER sized guy. I asked him how it fit him and he let me sit in it. Plenty of room........ stock big steering wheel but closer to the dash and it didn't look wierd. Leg room is OK. It ain't easy stayin' this fat...... gotta eat pretty near ALL the time.

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
There is a FAQ or tech tip here soewhere to shorten the intermediate shaft in steering column and move the whole column assembly forward a couple of inches, combine that with a tilt and maybe a set of factory bucket seats and you will fit just fine

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
There is a "mod" where you can extend the slot in the steering column, which allows it to be pushed back towards the dash a little more. That may help a little. I tilt may also help. Good luck!

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
'scuse me while I finish this 14 lb breakfast burrito before responding... Ok, done. Yeah, I ran into the same problem with the '69 I just sold. I never did fit in it like the other '69 I had years ago. I put a smaller wheel on it and that helped a bit.
Related side note: I saw a guy on the freeway today driving a '68 C-20 with a cab over Lance camper on the back. Nice ride, but I SWEAR if the driver was less than 6'6" and 350 lbs, I'd be surprised! His head was the size of a small PLANET! Funny... |

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
I'm 6'3" tall with a 50" chest and I don't find my truck too bad with the original bench, mind you I used to drive a triumph Spitfire and even smaller than that a Fiat 126, if you don't know what one is have a look below (and no thats not me at the back! )

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
I have an oversized lawn chair my son calls Hugh Jarse....... maybe I'll sit in my lawn chair in the bed and let my wife drive me around. I did have it running today, lots of exhaust leaks but didnt sound bad--- for a few minutes. I slowed the idle down and it was ok at first then it started to die back and would quit if I blipped the throttle. I don't know if the engine is a 305 or a 350, I haven't looked at any pad numbers on the engine, It's got center bolt valve covers, edelbrock intake and carb.... headers and a GM HEI dist. I thought it was starving but seems to have good delvery on the accelerator pump. I took the rubber fuel line off just past the inline filter and gas squirted out. Guess it's not starving... maybe trash in the carb. I don't know how long since it ran. I took the cap off of th dist.---- pretty cruddy, burned down carbon post in the center and the the rotor is pretty fried too. I finally got too hot to mess with it any more.
OH YEAH, I had my big self in and out 20 times or so, I think a flatter steering wheel would give me more room too.

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
Ypu might consider a 73-87 seat.
They sit several inches lower than 67-72 and might help.

Re: Incredible Shrinking Truck
Thanks ya'll.
extd56, what is your steering wheek out of? I have a 3 spoke wheel that looks a lot like yours------ the rim is green and I've wondered what veh. it came in------- don't think it's aftermarket. I think your wheel is flatter than the original in my truck, not as deep, which would give me more belly-room thanks again
