Remove top door hinge....?

Can I do it without removing the fender? Or the door? Proper way to do this? Mine is shot...won't stop...just swings till fender stops it...ouch! I got a new one...now wondering what the best way to attack this.

Re: Remove top door hinge....?

I got mine off without dropping the fender through a variety of swivels and tape. But I ended up having to take it off to put the hinge back on!

Re: Remove top door hinge....?

I did the hinge pins on both of my trucks without having to remove the front fender at all. I used this tool to hold the door......

If you were closer, I'd be happy to let you borrow the tool....

1/2 a year old revival isn't bad right?!

I searched and couldn't find anything close to what I have occurring.

Just like the post I quoted the PO let the fender "stop" the door often...well one to many. and now the door, where the top hinge is bolted, is torn

Does anyone have any solutions that doesn't involve a new door or repaint?

Thanks

Re: Remove top door hinge....?

no repaint? that's a tough one.

You can weld it but then you'd want to paint it.

I mean I could primer it for protection but is it likely that it will effect my door skin?

Re: Remove top door hinge....?

The paint or the welding? When you weld sheet metal you want to make a million tack welds and not one continuos weld or it will probably warp.

My question is, why would your door swing all the way back against the fender if your stopper is still in place? Does it pop out of the hinge?

From looking at the pics, it seems to me that the door is weak in that area from rust. I would consider looking for a good used one to replace it with.

Re: Remove top door hinge....?

The hinge is shot too at the moment but along with weak old sheet metal and getting jerked around on the hinge it broke (before I got the truck).

I could get the welding done but I would rather not damage the paint on the outside. I recognize that a new door would probably be best but at my stage in life I would like to just mend this. Is it really plausible to mend it or just an all around bad idea?

Re: Remove top door hinge....?

No you can weld it up and make it last a while as long as the metal around it isn't too far gone.

Re: Remove top door hinge....?

I love this place! You are the second person to invite me to look into the OK section!

I tried to properly say hello.... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=391104

Oh and what are the odds i could get a patch panel on the inside to stiffen the mounting surface up a bit?

Re: Remove top door hinge....?

You'd be better off buying a new door.

Even if you could notch it for the nuts on the backside, it would be tough to weld it in.

X2

I just did this fix. It sucked.

I have pics of my repair job on 2 doors that were otherwise good. Check my build thread pages 4 and 5. It's not a write up or anything just some pics.

My original plan was to cut the damaged section off the "new" door. Then use the old door as a donor for a patch panel.

The problem is, you can't just cut that section out and weld something in, its braced internally with all kinds of bends and angles... And all my cutting devices just caused more damage.

So ended up stuffing some sheet metal behind all that stuff and welding it in. It's solid now and would look better if it was'nt my first official repair with a welder.

My opinion is that it can be done but not easily (provided that the damage is similar to what I had and your bolt hole plate is solid).

I also don't think that you'll have enough heat to damage the paint on the outside of the door. Mine never got hotter than my bare hand could touch on the outside. Granted, my doors are not painted so I cant say for sure.

Re: Remove top door hinge....?

When your door front plate that supports the hinge rusts through and you weld it--you are working on very weak metal that gets weaker with welding!!. The only way to fix that is to remove the door, cut a major section out of the door plate that supports the hinge, and weld in a new section of plate which is way more work then the door is worth. You can usually buy a good used door for around $150-250 that if gone through, will last forever. A perfect door with a rusted out backing plate is junk and only good for internal parts. Sorry but there is no easy fix here.
