Can you ID my rear axle housing?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to figure out if my rear axle housing is stock for my truck or not. Here are the numbers I found on it.

On the left tube is 3838227 with the letter 'N' to the left and below that number. And on the right tube it says GM4.

It is a 12 bolt w/ 17 spline yoke and axles.

I think the gears are 3.73.

The truck is a 1966 C10 2WD.

Any info would be great, Google knows nothing about that number

there is a code on the axle on the passenger of the housing, the code will tell the ratio.---Vernski

The 17 spline axles in the 12 bolts, were in the '63 & '64 model years. Does the panhard bar go from the frame to a bracket on the pass side axle tube or to the pass side of the center section?

Yeah, that is a late '63 or '64 housing if it had 17 spline axles. I'm not sure if the '65 had that panhard mount or not. I'll have to check on that. Looks like someone put new housing ends on it? or did it just get cleaned up really good?

I just got it back from getting cleaned and powder coated, what you're seeing on there is shrink wrap thats been wrapped around them to protect them. Had it done the same time as my frame

Interesting info.. I wonder if someone really did swap this thing out at some point...

You can buy everything to swap it to the 30 spline. but the axles come in 5lug, just drill them out. or get with a good company and have them build you the axles.

yeah, I bought this kit from eBay : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWNX%3AIT 4.11, limited slip setup. And I got in some 6 lug 30 spline axles from ECE. I also had to buy a new 30 spline yoke, got it from Summit for about $65.

I was just expecting this rear end to already be 30 spline, and not 17 .. that got me thinking that this isn't the original.

That is exactly how my '64 axle looks and it has 17 spline axles.

So am I going to need to grind that bracket off to go to a Deluxe Trac bar setup? Or Is it even worth while to get a deluxe trac bar?

The deluxe kits run the trac bar all the way to the right trailing arm rather than the axle..

I would say it depends on how much power you are planning on putting down on the pavement, and if you are planning on lowering the stance. Most of what I have seen is replacing the stock bar with the adjustable one so you can get the rear end centered. My 2cents.

On a side note, that bracket on the rear axle also is the location for the T split for the rear brake lines on mine. So if you grind it off you will have to come up with another setup for that.

Well, I am doing a 4/6 drop w/ about 375-400hp at the motor.

Everything I've read says getting the longer bar corrects centering issues when lowering that much.. Did you go w/ the stock bar replacement on your truck?

I think with that drop you should be ok with just putting in the adjustable arm and save some money. I actually kept the stock one on mine because I havent done any changes to the stance. I did replace the bushings with urethane ones. Note my side note in the previous post above though

ah, good point I'll look in to the adjustable bar first and see how that goes. If it doesn't work out, then I'll do what I need to do to get the longer bar to work.

Anytime, also I think there are some companies out there that sell the track bar with ball joints at the end and not bushings.

I would say go with a long bar, it should help a little with axle hopping if you take off hard. but it is better at centering the axle. I would say either build your own if you can or check out www.***************** they can hook you up for sure. And they are way cheaper then a lot of low jack companys.
