sport bumper mounting
can someone tell me if you use the flimsy horizontal plate when mounting a sport bumper off a blazer on a pickup? I always thought that plate was what hid the tailgate hinges. it looks like it will hit the edges of the fenders on a pickup.
i think it may look OK w/o it. any help/pictures appreciated

The outer brackets work off the blazer and on the inner brackets are part of the frame on a 73-80 blazer

yes i understand i need inner brackets made or purchased for a pickup. this is the flimsy piece that goes on top and lies flat over the brackets. looks like on a pickup, the tailgate swings down into it. i left it off and it looks good

I bought the bumper mounting bracket kit from LMC. It was great until I installed the smooth bumper and realized that it was too far away from the back of the truck. I then had to hack and inch and a half out of the new brackets. The ones that go straight back from the frame are easy, but the angled ones really suck because you have to cut them on an angle so that you lose an inch and a half front to back but don't lose anything side to side because the holes have to line up!...If that makes any sense to you?

On pickups with a sport bumper, the flimsy plate you are talking about is two pieces, one for each side. They are only about 8" long, just enough to cover the brackets.

So was the truck sport bumper different than the Suburban bumper in any way?
I put a mid 80's Suburban sport bumper onto my 67 C-10 long ago and when I got my 78 K20 with the nasty step bumper I made the swap. I had only the outer brackets as the inner's did not fit the 67 so there are extra holes inboard that I filled with spare bolts. It seems pretty flimsy this way so I had planned on building inner brackets to tighten it up a little. |
