Rear end options...

The search function refuses to work today for some reason, so heres my question. I'm looking to get rid of the open diff in my truck, but am having trouble finding resources to give me any info on this. What I'm looking for is what trucks came stock with posi/limited slip rear ends, how I can identify this, what rear ends are compatible in my truck (1981 running gear) and what gears I should be looking at running to work the best with my set-up (sbc, TH350, 275/60R15 tires) or would it just be best to have my current rearend rebuilt with a posi/limited slip. I've not yet identified whats in my truck, but it has a 12-bolt cover.

Once again, if search would work, I'd use it. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Rear end options...

If you've already gotta 12 bolt I'd rebuild it with an Auburn posi unit & some 3.08 or 3.42 gears with those 275/60-15s. If you plan to install a 700R4 later down the road I'd step up to 3.73 or 4.10 gears.

Re: Rear end options...

I'd like to eventually be running a 700r4. Been looking around at bowtieoverdrives.com at my options...

Re: Rear end options...

A posi-traction/limited-slip differential is a "option" available to any truck, so there isn't any one specific model where you would find it.
If you are happy with the ratio that you already have, I would have the differential added to what you have.
If you are going to an overdrive, I would do both at the same time. The better gearing for the OD would be too low for your TH350.
