1972 Cheyenne Super... Carburetor Rebuilt!
First Post!
I just bought a 1972 Cheyenne Super. I used to ride a Honda scooter everyday and laugh at gas prices when everyone else was sweating. As a way of getting around a little bit warmer last winter I borrowed a '72 C10 from a friend and fell in love with it. As fate would have it, my scooter was stolen a month ago and that same friend happened to have a '72 Cheyenne Super in need of some TLC that he was willing to let go of so.... I have officially joined the club! Don't worry, it won't take much to get rolling. The truck hasn't run in about two years and needs a transmission rebuild, a little brake work, and some wiring in the dash. First step, Holley rebuild kit 37-119... I love it. Nice knowing there are still people out there who like to get a little greasy. There hardly anyone where I live with a truck that isn't brand new, bunch of pampered little kids, adding to the credit problem, LOL. These are real simple trucks so have fun and if ya need help just ask.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super.. my new baby
It will be a daily driver for sure. It looks like the engine may have been rebuilt in the last 5-10 years... the first thing I noticed when I popped the hood was a Holley carb and Edelbrock intake and a fresher than original coat of paint on the engine / heads. I'll probably keep it pretty close to stock appearance wise but I'm not afraid of a few go fast parts. The first round of that will likely be headers/exhaust so my baby can breathe right with all of that air blowin down her throat. More pics to come!

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super.. my new baby
...forgot to mention! I am driving the green mustang you can see part of in the background until I get this baby purring. I met the tow truck driver at the shop it was sitting at so he could follow me home. Truck is on the flatbed, all ready to go so I jump in the mustang start it up and 650 WSM is playing "American Made" by the Oak Ridge Boys. If that wasn't a sign from above I don't know what is. Haha, had to share!

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super.. my new baby
Just an fyi, you don't need any headers until you get the go fast parts in it. Even then you don't really need them unless you're going to make a few runs down the dragstip!
New pipes and the right mufflers will help but you'd be better off with the iron manifolds if it's close to stock. However, the headers will add a distinctive sound if that's what you're looking for. Last edited by highperf4x4; 09-12-2009 at 01:30 AM. |

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super.. my new baby
Actually it probably has too much intake for the motor.
Even a bored out engine with flat top pistons and a mild cam doesn't need anything other than a dual plane intake like an edelbrock performer. They will create alot more low end torque. Your torque is affected by manifold vacum. A single plane intake or a high rise will kill it. In fact you get nothing from those types of intakes but poor gas mileage unless your engine can reach rpms of 6000 or higher. That's where a tunnel ram and a set of headers will let the engine "breathe". That's why I suggested waiting for the go fast parts. If the intake isn't a dual plane, I'd jerk it off and put one on until you're ready to build a performance engine. I'm just offering opinions for you to consider. I don't know exactly what's in the motor but I'm assuming it's pretty close to stock. If it is, it will run better with a stock intake and iron exhaust manifolds. Finished rebuilding the carburetor last night. Took a few pics of the process... she's alot cleaner now!
before... during... after... Next on the list is removing and cleaning the fuel tank... that is if it ever stops raining in Nashville. |
