Opinion: Typhoon engine in a 72..
Im looking to put a 93 GMC typhoon engine into my 72 short bed 2wd. I was going to use a stock 700r4 so no awd. I really like this motor and it would def. be a unique swap. Also, since its essentially a small block, the swap shouldnt be too hard and the power is good enough to make this truck pretty quick. Your thoughts/opinions? And yes, i know this is not practical, but say i wanted to do it.

Sounds like a cool idea to me......I go with a build 200R4 for the better 1st - 2nd ratio spread. Probably help a little with keeping the turbo spooled up.
I've always loved the Cyclone and Typhoon.

Found a typhoon motor, has a main bearing knock however, shouldnt be too hard to rebuild, guy hasnt given me a price yet, its just like rebuilding a regular 4.3 v6 right?

If my memory serves, the Typhoon and Syclone only had about a 400 lb. load rating. I'd check the curb weight against the weight of your truck and how you intend to use it.

Just going to use it as a cruiser, not going to pull anything. I think a shortbed 2wd 72 pickup weighs about the same as an awd typhoon.

I would say that the load rating had to do with the full time t-case, but I could be wrong. Sounds like a cool idea to me, and I havent seen one yet, so unique as well. Go for it!

Re: Opinion: Typhoon engine in a 72..
When you consider that this turbo version puts out way more than the normal 4.3L V6 that they put in the bloated GMT800s and early 900s, this motor will be fine.
The 4.3L V6 thinks it's a V8 when it comes to torque, it will be fine. |

Re: Opinion: Typhoon engine in a 72..
so 200R4 trans vs. a 700R4 with this set-up? What kind of gears should best? looking for quickness, not top speed, also, i will be running a 20" wheel

3.73:1 seem to be the best choice when using an overdrive auto. Have a 700 in mine with 3.73......no complaints.
