Help With Power Windows

I am having a hard time with the power window wiring. I have an 86 GMC and swapped a set of power lock/window doors onto it. I can't get the windows to work. I think I may be missing something, and I could use your guy's help. I have no power on the WDO buss of the fuse panel. I figure that this is what is hanging me up. I think I'm supposed to have a circuit breaker or something there, since that is too high of an amperage to put to a switch. I have the harness, and I know both windows and locks work, so the problem is with the WDO buss (I'm thinking). Thanks for helping me out.

Re: Help With Power Windows

Thanks, that did help me out. I actually found that thread last night, and also when I realized I was missing something. How and where does the 30 amp breaker go? When I bought the doors, the guy gave me a whole wiring harness, but I don't think it had a 30A breaker with it. You wouldn't happen to have a pic of one would you?

Re: Help With Power Windows

I have looked for the one I have laying around and can't find it...I have also looked for a pic of a fuse box....I'm having a bad search night

the breaker is a little metal box about the size of a blade type fuse with two spades that plug in just like a fuse....I'm not 100% sure on where it plugs in at the moment.....

found a pic...notice the silver rectangles that say 30A12V...that is what you need

Re: Help With Power Windows

Thanks So much for your help. What I ended up doing was running a maxi fuse from the Batt. buss (always "hot") to the unoccupied terminal on the WDO buss. I couldn't get a circuit breaker for a couple days, so I thought I'd try this. It works the same, but if for some reason it blows the circuit, I have to get another fuse, not just reset the breaker. So far so good though. Only problem is that the windows are DAMN slow. Since I only paid 80 for the doors, I'm not too worried about it yet. Thanks for all of your help though, I sincerely appreciate it!

Re: Help With Power Windows

Yeah slow window motors are common in the 80's GM vehicles. Sometimes you can clean the tracks, and grease them and the motor gears up. Other than that replace the window motor. Which is a PITA!!!

Re: Help With Power Windows

I didn't get a breaker- instead I used a maxi fuse. I assume you know what that is, but if not, it is a gigantic version of a regular spade or clip type fuse. I went to Kragen, and they said they could order one for me (every time I go there they never have what I want in stock). I figured a circuit breaker and a fuse do exactly the same thing only in a different way. Not really wanting to wait 2-3 business days, I opted for the maxi fuse. It was like 4 bucks or so. It is bigger so you can go from the first buss (constant battery power) to the 3rd buss(WDO or power window power) easily without modification. I'd show you a picture, but it won't look good since the fuse block has a limited access. By the way, I have a full (except for the power window/lock harness) wiring harness off of an 84 if you know of anyone interested. I think it is off of an 84. When I bought the doors, the guy said they were from an 84, but the GM door sticker says 87 on it. Anyway the wiring harness has the fuse block, door buzzer switches, a/c light etc. I think it has the cruise module as well. I don't really know what everything is, but there is quite a lot.
