a 92 I really liked swb....
was on ebay today and really considered maybe making a bid for it. I love the 86 square to death but was considering an " upgrade". As much as i hated to. But i see from a post that 88-98 trucks have about the same mpg as the 86. I get 16 mpg on the highway. They ,from what i have read today, and from another person on this sight get the same mpg as myself and some others on here.

If you want better mileage you need to get a 96 or newer. That's when they added the Vortec motors. They were fuel injected rather than throttle body. More power and better mpg.

Ya, I guess I fail to see the "upgrade" to a 92. Maybe that's just me.

Just depends on which body style you prefer. I like both, but like Ken stated. If I was to do an "upgrade" it would be to at least a 96. However the 454SS's are a good reason to go with an earlier one.

Re: a 92 I really liked swb....
if it was me, i would look for an 87, tbi and square body, what more would you want?(maybe a procharged lsX 6.0)
i would choose a tbi over a vortec, ive have both and my tbi has 300k plus and runs good still, my vortec crapped out at 200k but performance wise vortec is the way to go but i would change the intake gaskets and update the spider injector. Last edited by fiddy9apache; 09-29-2009 at 06:21 PM. |

If MPG is the goal, look at the 5.3 swap into your current truck. You will make huge improvements on power, reliability, and MPG. And probably wont spend much more than you would for another truck. Check out this link: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=350986

Re: a 92 I really liked swb....
I was planning on a 5.3 swap but i decided to do it to the el camino. Love both body styles but if im getting the same type of mpg why bother. I got kinda use to driving a volvo s60 for a few months and i just have to adjust again thas all. I have a 40 mile round trip commute in los angeles traffic everyday and then i head down to san diego every weekend. The volvo was boring to drive though lol.

Re: a 92 I really liked swb....
shrtbx- i drive a 2wd '98 c1500 ext cab short bed everyday. one thing i can't complain about is the mileage. most tanks average around 18 mpg, which is me creeping through traffic jams on the supposed highway that i take to work. to put the mileage into perspective, my previous vehicle was a little toyota 2wd with a 4cyl/5spd. over the same commute, that truck would only average low-20's. i think i'll sacrifice 3-4 mpg for a fullsize truck and 4 more cylinders!
all that being said, the vortec engine is nowhere near as friendly to work on as a tbi or carb'd engine... too many wires, hoses, and brackets in the way. the other funny thing about your post is that i'm looking to get rid of my '98 and pick up a '67-'80 truck. ed Last edited by burger; 09-30-2009 at 01:07 PM. |
