door will not lock
I noticed the other day that when I lock the door on my 72 c/10 that the door knob goes down (it looks locked) but you can open the door just the same.
I rolled down the window and looked in with a flashlight at the lock and linkage and saw nothing obvious, has this happened to anyone else? Thanks ahead of time for any help. |

Re: door will not lock
Pretty sure you have to use the key to lock the doors. Call it idiot proof.

Re: door will not lock
My locks just pop back up when the door is shut, even when you hold the door handle button in. It says in the owner manual you must lock it with the key,

Re: door will not lock
Make sure your locking it completely, and what I mean is while you turn the key press on the door a little with your knee from the outside, If your door doesn’t fit perfectly it won’t lock, the lock will drop about a quarter of an inch but it is not fully locking, so try and push as you lock with the key,
If you are just locking and closing then leh72super1500 is correct it will not allow you to lock your door and then close, you can only lock with the key from the outside. Just and idea.

Re: door will not lock
I don't know if you've already solved your problem, but I also have this problem with my '72 k20. I found that when the door latches the geared wheel in the door is off by about an 1/8th of an inch or less and this causes the lock mechanism to hit the tooth instead of the valley between the teeth. I haven't tried to re-align the door because it seems to be okay. I did mess with the striker plate and it didn't help. I'm considering just grinding off some of the lock tooth if I can't get it to work. Hope I'm not too much of a butcher. I'd rather fix it properly.

Re: door will not lock
I had the same problem as Sakid. Thought I could do a little grinding too. Waste of time. Can't because the metal is hardened. Made no difference so I bought new latches. Works great now. Parts get worn out after 40 years. Easier to replace them with new.

Re: door will not lock
Thanks geezer. I was actually looking at it again today saw that the bushing or pin that the gear rides on is quite worn and figured that'd be the way to go. I haven't checked at Lordco (I see you're from Nanaimo) yet, but if they don't have this vintage of parts do you suggest a good aftermarket source for these trucks. Thanks so much for your help.

Re: door will not lock
Bought mine from LMC. Don't think Lordco would have them. Check out LMC.com if you haven't already. I think mine were 100 bucks a pair.

Re: door will not lock
Awesome, thanks. I didn't think Lordco would. I also came across this site from a place in Lacombe AB, but the online catalogue isn't up right now so I can't speak for their prices. Thought it might be of some help some time. http://www.classicbowtie.com/Page%201.htm

Re: door will not lock
I just saw this string doing a search. I've got the exact same problem as sakid & geezer...it appears the geared wheel is about an 1/8" off from the lock mechanism. I'm restoring the truck...cab is all together and I have the same problem with both doors. Guess I need new latches. Did that work for yours sakid? My doors line up perfectly too...I moved the striker around in multiple positions but nothing has helped.
Thanks.

Re: door will not lock
I'd love to say that I fixed it, but the truth is that it's been in my back yard for the past 6 months or so and I haven't worked on it. I looked into new mechanisms and here in canada they're worth about $65 a side, new. I figured, when I'm ready to get it done, that was pretty reasonable. Let me know how it goes if you don't mind.

Re: door will not lock
My ds door is the same. I never bothered to fix it. I lift on the handle while I lock it with my key.

Re: door will not lock
Well, I kept playing around with it. I think the problem is 40 yr old worn gear locks (as several have mentioned in similar strings) combined with the new weatherstripping. By moving the strikers out slightly I was finally able to lock both doors, but I have to push in fairly hard on the doors to get them to lock. The strikers were almost all the way out already, and if I play with them too much the doors won't close properly. My guess is that new latches would improve the situation, but I'll hold off on that since I did finally get them to lock by applying pressure on the doors.
Thanks for your feedback.
