White smoke on startup and tinging noise..
when i first crank the truck cold or hot blows a white smoke cloud out 1 exhaust pipe.
Has tinging noise comming from 1 side of motor and doesnt feel like it should have the power of a 350 (myself and others agree) played with the timing today also which hose should be plugged, and on my carb i have 2 places for the hose, 1 taller than the other the hose is plugged into the lower port on the right side of carb. timing is at 8* before is this all correct???

Re: White smoke on startup and tinging noise..
It sounds lkie the possibility of a valve spring that is broken and not closing the valve fully. I would try pulling the valve cover on the side where the noise is.

I always thought white smoke meant you were burning coolant/water.

Re: White smoke on startup and tinging noise..
it sounds like you have a leaking head gasket and some coolant is getting into one of the cylinders. I would check the coolant level and see if its low at all. I would also pull the plugs and check the oil to see if it's milky white.

Re: White smoke on startup and tinging noise..
My 93 Toyota pickup was blowing a lot of white smoke out the tailpipe but ran fine. Coolant level kept going down. Turns out that the head developed a pinhole in an exhaust port and was squirting coolant into the exhaust port. Had the head welded and new head gasket out on. Cost me over $2,000at the dealer.
