Power Steering Pump Brackets
Anyone have any pics of correct power steering pump brackets for sbc.......One I have is correct for front of engine, the one for the backside looks like it bolts up to the motor mount but will not work......Maybe its for the newer style motor mounts ?????????

you will have to cut the insulator to make it fit.the early one accomodated that brkt. what ps pump are you using; early or late

it is in the truck. if you do a judicious cut you wont harm the insulator. some of the insulators do also have a metal lip that you have to trim. the originals had smaller insulators on them. I will see what I can do.

How funny. I just went to the junk yard today and got brackets and a pump. After a lot of searching, I ended up buying a pump and brackets off a early 80's Grand Prix with a 6 cylinder motor. I dont have pics yet. One bracket bolts with 3 bolts to the front of the head. The other bolts to the #1 exhaust studs. Then the steering pump itself has a bracket hole that bolts to the water pump. Other then having hose problems matching with my steering gear box. The pump bolted on perfect.

I trimmed some of the rubber to make mine fit. I used the old 283 mount as a template and used a cut-off wheel. Wasn't a big deal and after that it snugged up fine.

This power steering pump assembly is intended to be used with the short water pump which is what these trucks came with originally. Having seen the pics of your engine I see you have the long water pump. I believe it will work if you use the correct crank pulley. Did you get a crank pulley from Tony with the pump and brackets?

there is a lot of juggling with parts on these trucks if you didn't have the right ones in the first place. as I took a detroit out of mine everything was gone.
anyway when I got my brackets he didn't ship the pump as it would just add to the shipping and I thouigh that they were all the same as I had the later pump with the press on pulley. I remedied that by making a complete .160" spacer behind the pump brkt. I have a matched set of belts for the alt. w/pump so adding the 3rd crank pulley fot the p/s and it came out just right. I was a little baffled by that rear pump brkt and how it did attach to the eng mount until I saw an earlier insulator and just modified it ron |

No I didn't get a pump pulley with the kit........Already had other pulleys, what pump pulley could I use to drive it off the rear grove on my pulley set up......This is what I have, any suggestions ???????

the early pump had a nut to hold the pulley on and the later used a press on pully. the pulleys are not interchangeable
early pump goes to short w/pump and the press on pulley goes to the long w/pump. c/fab was refering to the crank pulley.. you can just bolt on an extra crank pulley to the front of the one that you already have ron |

I understand the difference the early and late model pulleys......I'm wanting to use the back belt drive on my bottom pulley for the power steering pump, since the front groves are designated for alternator. I wasn't sure if it would have to be an offset pulley for the power steering pump ???????????

It appears that I am ignorant of the belt setup that would go with your eng and w/pump. where does the orig p/s belt go on your system, to the frt or rear pulley.
mine with the short w/pump Is an assortment of pieces that have come together to work with the p/s belt being on the outside on a 3 pulley crank and that is with the early bracket and the later pump. There is a .160" thickness plate in behind the pump bracket to make it align. I don't know where the stk belt is supposed to be ron |

Problem some what fixed....... I used spacers to shim the front mounting bracket out so pulley would line up and instead of cutting into the motor mount, I cut bracket off that goes over the bottom part of motor mount that needed to be cut.........I didn't like the idea of cutting the engine mount.
It tighten up great and it all lines up !!!!!! Now I need to paint it and find a chrome pulley. |

Not trying to be a jerk, but since you're running a long water pump, I would have just went with the pump and brackets for the long water pump.
At this point since you already have the pump and brackets for the SWP, you could get the crank pulley for a SWP that drives the PS pump. I think it will sit right behind the groove you have it lined up on now. Then you could get rid of the spacers you have now. Although adding that pulley behind your current crank pulley is going to move the pulley forward about a 1/16" or so.

Your absolutely right, no need in trying to cut corners this late in the game........Thanks.........I'm pulling the motor and trans next week to send it off to body shop. While I have it out I'll change it to lwp brackets........Guess I was getting to bored and needed something to do

Another thought....when shopping for another PS pump, be sure to get one with the same style fittings as your steering box. In 1980-81 they switched to a metric sized fitting with an O-ring. Prevoius years had a standard inverted flare fitting. Getting the pump the same style just makes buying hoses easier.....off the shelf versus custom made hoses.

198 I have a chrome one I bought for my truck. But I'm not using it since theres no chrome on my motor, and all my pullys are black. It's new still in the package. I'll get a pic if you want it. and I'll get more info for you aswell.
