Re: What kind of manual Trans is good for a Dually 1Ton 6.2

its not low geared, its 1:1 like every other non over drive man and auto trans.

you could also setup a t5, nv3500/3550, getrag, t56, or any other chevy 5spd.

a 4500 will be the strongest and a t56 will probably be the most expensive.

Re: What kind of manual Trans is good for a Dually 1Ton 6.2

I would do a nv3500 or a nv4500 if I had the money.I too am cursed with the sm465 trans but I have been looking at a cheaper alt.It is the o/d box from
from ranger they run about $1400 and require little modifcation. The unit bolts in between your bellhousing and trans so what you have to do is shorten the driveshaft 7" and move your shifter hole back and make a hole for the o/d shifter.
Here is the link and som info:
http://www.high-impact.net/transmiss...roverdrive.htm

The Ranger Torque Splitter is an auxiliary gear box that bolts in front of the standard Chevy, Ford and Land Cruiser 4 speed transmissions. This fully synchronized unit allows you to split your gears at any time. Just push in the clutch, grab the Ranger's shift lever, (You will have two shifters: one for your main trans and one for the Ranger) and shift. At any speed. The unit is available in either a 27% overdrive or a special order 17% underdrive.
(Please call for availability on the 17% underdrive models.) Through the years it has gone through several design changes. Today's unit is cast aluminum, measuring 7-1/2" long. The gears are helical cut and the shifting mechanism is a short throw manual shift. The unit is built to handle 420 ft./lbs. of torque and has a G.V.W. rating of 25,000 lbs. This unit is ideal for towing applications or improving gas mileage by lowering the RPMs

Or you could go with a Gear Vendors OD unit behind the trans...

DO NOT buy a T-5, NV3500, or Getrag! They will all fall apart or explode with that truck. NV4500 is best, it can handle everything. T56, not so much, it is a performance tranny. Not a truck tranny.

Which getrag are you talking about? Mine has over 200k on it and hasn't blown up, and yes it's behind a diesel. T-5's and 3500's light duty and will probably break the first time you try to haul anything heavier than a balloon.

The half ton chevy getrags and the 3/4 and 1 ton dodge getrags.

If it's the G360 you are refering to their only problem is that they like to leak and people don't like to check them in between fluid changes. Nothing likes to run w/o lube.

I, personally, will never install an aftermarket od unit for that reason.

What transmission are you asking about? Several were mentioned in this thread.

NV4500..........sorry. That is if this would be the best all around tranny. Thought about putting a Tremec 6spd in but not sure what would be entailed with that other than the obvious cost. Truck will be more a driver than anything but would be hauling a bit.

Small block,Big block? 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton? How much weight are you going to haul? If you have 1/2 ton I whould lean toward a NV3500. NV4500s are strong but heavy and 1st gear is really low.

Re: What kind of manual Trans is good for a Dually 1Ton 6.2

Check out the Spicer 3053A. Not sure if they still come as cheap as the article says but something to keep in mind. Some of the Clark 5 speed's that came in medium duty trucks also had an OD gear.

http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticl...ion/index.html

Also, the NV4500 comes pretty pricey by itself...but I've seen some complete trucks with them for cheap (wrecked, blown motor, etc)...cheaper for the whole truck than buying the trans alone. You may be able to pull it and all the associated parts then part out the truck and make your money back. Even taking the $200-$300 scrap metal value on the truck makes you money back.

Shouldn't matter should it? Just a four bolt install or are the newer ones different? I have a TBI 350 and it would mostly haul a 25' camper or an 18-20' flat deck with a car/truck on it. Mostly a daily.

....and thanks for the info thirdstreettito
