9" Rearend question
Hi need help with rear ends how do you no if its a 9" rear?? my nieghbor has a 1992 ford explorer xlt -- and a 1968 F100 and he said I can take what I need, but I didnt no if the rear ends are any good..dose any one know??

the 68 should be a 9 and the explorer is a 8.8. either are a good choice go with the one in best condition

would they be posi can you lift the back and spin tires and till or do you have to look in side??? |

look at the tags on the diffs . Ford uses a code like 3L55 = 3.55 limited slip . An open diff will have a decimal point instead of the L .

There is a number that's close to the nut that I can't see, it's not posi or locker, you want to find a tag with a L in the botton line.

An easy way to tell if it's a 9" is a socket won't fit on the bottom stud. You have to use a wrench.

It's a 9" by the numbers on the tag but X.25 is the gear ratio and the 9 refers to 9".

It would be 3.25 as the 9" only had one set of gears that ended in .25

25 9 is the tooth count. 25 teeth on the ring and 9 on the pinion which equals a 2.78 gears ratio. 25 devided by 9
