65 Power Steering Conversion

Hey Guys,

I did the power steering box conversion last week on my 65 and I thought I would post up some pictures that might help someone else doing the same thing.

I used the CPP kit. CaptainFab also makes a kit. Here is his thread that has a lot of good info.

I am installing a LS motor that has the PS pump on it.

Excellent presentation and great pictures to go along with the conversion. This is the best "play-by-play", I have seen on this conversion and I appreciate your time and efforts. I have done several and this hits all the key elements of the power steering box mounting & shaft modification on the button.

TR65...That's over the top as far as instructions..I did this conversion about a year ago, would have been easier with your help though.. Big help

I sure don't like using just a 1/4 inch bolt to keep the steering shaft indexed on the rag joint. I'd feel a lot better with a weld bead around it too.

I hear you Tex. I might do that. CPP recommended bolting instead of welding so I did it. I am not sure that the bolt is the weak link in that whole gimickus though. In theory the steering shaft will see very little torque as long as the engine is running. The spline into the gear box is smaller than the one on the manual box as well.

Well the goal was to take it off the road the end of August and be driving the LS2 by the end of December. Ain't going to happen. Eventhough I did a lot of things in advance, fabbing engine mounts, cross member, etc. took a lot more work than I thought, as usual. And I am going to re-program the computer myself, oh yea, and then the wiring. I am using the stock harness and I have pre-wired it but the chances of it all being right are nil.

I have to admit, I had one of those bolts break! I was lucky to be turning a corner slowly with no cars coming. Was a left turn, so I went straight right into the ditch. I think I will look into welding mine.

Where do you get the shaft extension, mine didn't come with one.......And why do you have to change the idler arm........Thanks
