need urgent help quick!

with my luck, thismorning in 20 degree weather my alternator gave out at the halfway mark on my daily trek to school, and of course with a hi-po ignition system the battery didnt get me too much farther on its own, i managed to get a trailer frm my instructor and got it to class, my ? is, i have an alternator from a 96 (which i know is a different design but will fit) that i want to take and put it on to get my truck home, problem is, the single wire plug on the truck wont fit into the 96 alternator, and i cant for the life of me find the plug to the 96 alternator(used to be on my truck) my question is, is it absoloutley necessary? can i get the truck home with the alternator hooked up but not plugged in? thank you for any help!

what does the hook up look like alot of times you can use a spade connector to make the connection and then get the plug later.

With a good charge on the battery, I would think the truck will run for quite a while without a working alternator. Are you sure you don't have another problem?

Re: need urgent help quick!

dont try to rig this you will fry the harness... When your alternator goes out, you run off the battery and you can and will cook the battery. The longer you run it this way you heat up the lead plates and the acid ( water) evaporates.
The correct thing to do is to have the battery charged and filled and replace the alternator..with the proper one
In addition the unplugged 96 alternator is like keeping the original non working alternator.. it does nothing

Re: need urgent help quick!

You have to fill the battery then charge it. It you do it the other way around it won't work.

How long of a drive is it? My saturn made it about 40 miles with a bad alt.
