Rav's 1979 C10 LWB Street Rod
This truck started life as a 79 C10 LWB. It belongs to a student of mine and this will be the second time we have torn it apart.
We started last school year to build an everyday street truck We stripped the body down to bare metal. prepped, epoxy primer, and painted it. motor build up is 350 standard bore KB flat tops new bearings Comp thumoer cam Performer intake holley carb header/flowmasters. This was all basic stuff in motor. Trans was rebuilt with a stage 2 shift kit. Now we are half way through the school year and this student has gotten a wild hair and a rich grandma and now we are starting over from scratch. Everything done last year except the paint will be scrapped and redone. Here are the plans and I will post pics of this build up. 1. 383 kit The 350 will be bored .030 over and we have purchased a 383 kit Scat steel crank H-Beam Rods with ARP bolts Forged Pistons 11.0 to 1 New flywheel, Balancer Edelbrock Victor Jr. 23° Heads Comp Xtreme XR300HR Roller cam Roller rockers with screw in studs and stud girdle ARP Head and Main Studs HV oil pump with drag race chrome pan Tunnel Ram with dual 500 Holleys March Revolver serpentine setup. Aluminum Radiator with dual SPAL fans 20 gallon fuel cell with a custom fuel system using -10 fuel line with a -8 return line Aeromotive electric fuel pump MSD billet Distributor with Mallory box and coil Stainless headers. (couldn't find a set of big tubes for the truck) Bug catcher scoop on top. Thats all I can think of right now for the motor. Trans is the previous rebuilt TH350 with shift kit and a new 3600 stall 2. Chassis I was worried about the leaf springs and I suggested a ladder bar setup, but another student said how about air bags. I have zero experience with them but researched and found a nice setup. We are using a complete Chassis Tech airbag setup from U-bagg-it and it includes a 4 link which will solve our traction problems. Well most of it I guess. Rear end will be the 12 bolt with an Auburn Posi unit and 4.11 with Moser axles. We are also doing a rear disk brake conversion with drilled and slotted rotors on all 4 corners. Tires will be Toyo 345-40-17 Drag radials. Well now I am rambling because I am trying to remember everything that we are planning to do. Questions, comments, and suggestions are welcome I'll post pics soon Last edited by raveer2000; 12-31-2009 at 11:14 PM. |

Re: Rav's 1979 C10 LWB Street Rod
I will have some pics up next week as soon as we go back to school after the holidays.
We have already pulled the motor and trans again, and it is on the engine stand ready to be torn down and sent off to the machine shop for boring. It should be an interesting build and this kid is just turning 18 and about to graduate. |

Well we started getting the air bag setup unpacked and trying to figure out where it all goes. Also pulled out the factory tank. The block has been sent off to the machine shop to be bored .030 over, 0 deck the block, line hone the mains, and hot tank it and install new cam bearings. We will start building the motor next week. The Tunnel Ram showed up today and both carbs were damaged. So much for the great deal on a tunnel ram dual carb setup. I am now waiting for the seller to contact me about the damage. So instead of waiting the kid went out and dropped $700 on 2 edelbrock 500 CFM carbs.

Re: Rav's 1979 C10 LWB Street Rod
Here is the motor right after we pulled it. It still looks decent since we rebuilt it in May of last year. We used a base coat/clear coat paint on the motor.

Re: Rav's 1979 C10 LWB Street Rod
Well the wheels showed up today. We have been waiting on them because we were not sure about clearance near the leafs springs with the 345's on it. Its nice to see we will have plenty of clearance. Tomorrow we start the 4 link. We have also been sanding the engine compartment. The owner has now decided on doing a vintage air conversion so we can remove the factory airbox under the hood.

Re: Rav's 1979 C10 LWB Street Rod
Yes smoothed front bumper, roll pan, and the tips are gonna have to go cause they are gonna be in the way of the bags. So turn downs are on the list also. I agree, its the little things. I've been trying to tell that boy that.Teenagers huh!! lol

A little update. AIM has its first strike with this build. The triangulated 4 link that they sent with the kit won't work with a long bed. At least not without boxing the frame and doing a bunch of fab work to get the kit to fit. I sent back the 4 link today to exchange it for a parallel 4 link that will weld to the outside of the frame. Also ordered the complete vintage air system that goes under the dash. Now we can remove the factory ugly airbox. Ordered all LOKAR dipsticks (oil and trans) Ordered all LOKAR kickdown cables and throttle cables. Ordered the Dual carb progressive throttle linkage Battery relocation kit Gorilla Locks and lugnuts for the new wheels Picked up the completely machined block from the shop Ordered the Moser axles with C-clip eliminators Need help figuring out the right size for the front tires. I'm going to start a new thread about that.

Re: Rav's 1979 C10 LWB Street Rod
I was referring to some of the stuff that many teenagers do to their vehicles. Not pointing out all teenagers. I see it all in the profession I have.
The 4 link is from airbagit. Unfortunately, I did not research the company before purchasing it. A lot of people don't like the company.
