Motor for 67
Hey guys!! I haven't been on in a while, been busy with other things.
So the 67 is going on the front burner, kind of. We have a 65 C60 with a 327 in it, and that's about the only good thing about that truck. I want to rebuild that motor and put it in the 67 C20. I would like to get 275-300 HP out of it. I would probably have the machine shop assemble the short block, as I have very little experience, and would rather have them deal with making sure the tolerances and everything is correct. What parts (heads, cam, intake, etc.) would you recommend? I'd like to keep it under $2500-3000, as well. Will Vortec heads fit? Also, was a 4 bolt main engine offered in heavy trucks, or were they all 2 bolt mains?

Re: Motor for 67
om the performance parts thats up to you, you can easily pull 275-300 hp out of a 327.
just depends on what you are looking for, more top end or low end, what trans do you want to run ect..... and the best way to find out if its a 2 or 4 bolt main is to pull the pan or run the serial.

Re: Motor for 67
vortec heads will make it easy to get 300hp out of the 327. I dont belive the small jurnal blocks ever came with four bolt mains. At 300hp it wont matter two bolts will be more than fine.

Re: Motor for 67
Ok.
It's a stock 4 speed trans. I'll put in a new clutch at the same time.

Re: Motor for 67
What should I look at for a cam? It'll be a cruiser, that might tow a small trailer around once in a while. Most it might see is a car, but I doubt it. Also, what kind of pistons should i use, assuming it has to be bored .030?

Re: Motor for 67
With a goal of 300hp tops, I would just use a good set of cast pistons and a nice set of rings, if you want to spend a little more, get hypereutectics, but I don't think they're needed for such a mild build. I'll probably get flamed for saying that, but 300hp is a very mild 327 and if it's tuned well, you should'nt have to worry about detonation if the compression is right (9:1 max at that power level), especially since it doesn't sound like you'll be revving it really hard. I would go for a cam with an advertised duration in the 260* range. that will give you good idle, torque and vacuum. You could easily have an 87 octane motor and your 275-300hp!

Re: Motor for 67
Unless you just want to build a 327 for the money you are willing to spend you could get a complete 350 crate motor that makes atleast that much hp.

Re: Motor for 67
A: We have the 327 sitting around, and it needs a home.
B: Everyone and their brother has a 350 crate motor in their car/truck. C: 327 could have been original in that truck, and I'm going for a vintage type look for it, make it into a 70's dragster tow-truck.

Re: Motor for 67
that's why I suggested a nice set of cast pistons and flat tappet cam. I was just saying, if 300hp is your goal (you said 275-300hp), you can do that without dumping a bump of unnecessary high dollar parts into the build. Of course you can always make more, just depends on what you want to spend.

Re: Motor for 67
just another two cents worth- I have done a couple 327s in the past and they are fine motors. But- they are high reving motors that dont produce alot of torque due to their short stroke. If you ever plan to tow something or just want to have some low end grunt, I wouldnt recommend a 327. Once again they are great engines, just takes alot of spinning of the engine to get power out of them.
When it all comes down to it all your gaining on your rebuild is the block and maybe the crank, everything else is going to get replaced. I would take off all the brackets, starter, ect have the heads checked for crackes ect and how big the combustion chambers are. Then look on craigslist for 350 block or shortblock. I see complete 350's all the time around $300.00 or less on craigslist.. Then sell your block on craigslist for the same or a little more. If you have a small journal crank/block they just not as strong as a normal 350. What I trying to say is your not saving alot of cash for the engine you have and may not be worth the savings just to have something different than the next guy. But what ever you choose I do wish you the best on your project..... |

Re: Motor for 67
If you are going to run stock manifolds I would suggest a 268 Comp High Energy. Headers I would say a 270 Magnum. Anything bigger and you may not be happy with driveability.

Re: Motor for 67
Build the 327 it will work fine in a c20 as long as you dont plan on pulling a 10,000lbs trailer over the mountains. With the stock gears in a c20 it will be geared plenty low enough for the 327 to pull most anything you would want to. Have fun with it and enjoy one of the best sbc ever made.
