Getting a 1 ton on the ground *questions*

A buddy just got an 85 Chevy crew cab dually. He wants to get this on the ground. I have done many 1/2 ton truck but I am not very familiar with these 1 ton frames. My question(s) is, what do I need to do to get this to lay body? How big of a "Z" would I need and would I be able to just hack off the bottom of the frame?
Thanks guys and any help would be great...

Have you thought about a Dropmember?
Nate's also got those sweet tubular a-arms,... and he makes them to fit the 3/4 ton and 1-ton trucks.

Sorry I didn't really answer your "Z" question. I just think it's easier than cutting the frame up.

Maybe someone else will chime in.

on the 1ton Squares most get lucky and do not need the raised crossmember. Unlike the lighter trucks the skid plate on the suspension cross member is usually higher than the bottom of the frame making the rails the first thing to touch ground.

I am trying to convince him to get the dropmember, but he is really trying to save some money and he has the tools and ability to do the fab work. I was just trying to get some sort of starting point for him.

*on a side note: I bought my rack and pinion on Tuesday, so my dropmember will be going in pretty soon. YAY ME...*

Re: Getting a 1 ton on the ground *questions*

z ing the frame will not let you lay body the frame is 4 inches lower than the rockers, a stock floor body drop using a 2x4 .250 wall will get you what you want also what kind of wheel tire combo are you planing on running 19,22,24, you can use single wheel front and rear parts to narrow the track or c&c rear if you want to get real narrow in the rear. this is what i'm doing on my 84 1ton dually crew cab. as far as a pb dropmember goes nate said as long as you are running a small block the rack would be ok. hope this helps any other questions let me know. later paul

I was told a BBC would be pushing it with a power R+P but the manual rack should hold up fine.
