Wheel and tire fitment...

Hey everyone. I have a 68 C10 stepside I am building. Currently, everything is stock, but it will soon have air ride.

I have access to some 22x9.5 inch wheels with 5.75 inch back spacing. Will that work? These wheels were for another truck that was also bagged and said the 5.75 backspacing was to allow the tire to tuck. Tires are 265.35.22.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Terry

What are your plans?

drop spindles?
Dropmember?

I worry about the front having enough backspacing,

Re: Wheel and tire fitment...

Seems my plans are always evolving, just like everyone elses. Depends on finding the funds. Not looking to lay it on the ground, but do want it low.

Keep in mind, all suspension and brakes are stock right now. Drum / Drum. Only think changed is drive train (5.7 EFI with 4L60E trans)

I bartered with a friend to get bags and brackets (no air management yet, but want the AirPod from RideTech or Accuair). None of this has been installed on this yet.

I foresee the following for suspension:

FRONT - Drop spindle with disk brake conversion and bags.

REAR - Bolt in c notch (maybe step notch) with bags on stock trailing arms.

All to stay 6 lug.

Any thoughts?

Re: Wheel and tire fitment...

I think a 22x9.5 inch wheels with 5.75 inch back space will be close up front.
(same as an 8" rim with 4.25" bs).
The drop spindles will push out the front track width .75" per side unless you go with the new 2" drop "modular" spindles from CPP.

In my opinion,...
I would spend your can on the bagged suspension first,... then buy wheels.

Re: Wheel and tire fitment...

My back wheels are 9.5" wide, with a 5.75 backspace, but are 17s with 275/50 tires, so they have about a 1/2" of sidewall sticking out on each side of the wheel. I also have the wider '71-'72 rearend. Mine bolted on fine, but were very close to rubbing on the inside, so I used a 1/4" spacer on each side. I don't think you will have any trouble using that bs on a 22" wheel, because you probably won't have as much sidewall sticking out on the sides. Now if you still have the narrower 6 lug '68 rearend, then no I don't think it will work.
I have 17x8s on the front with a 5" bs, so I'm not much help there.

Re: Wheel and tire fitment...

lolife99, Im looking at a set of boss 335, the only b.s that will work is 5.75, this year my truck will be bagged, I would get the mod drop spindle(if they ever become available again) but for now will just have a McGaughy's spindle, will the front rub?

What width and diameter wheels are we talking about?
5.75" BS is alot on a 8" rim,... but not on a 10" rim.

I assume you are talking about these same wheels front and rear?
Or are you running staggered width wheels?

Re: Wheel and tire fitment...

Sorry for not explaining myself fully, I was talking about a different wheel, the boss 335, its a 22x9.5(the only width they sell for the 22) and the only two choices are 5.75 and a 6.something B.S, Ill be running the 22's all around. I can get a wicked deal on these so I was hoping to get these on the cheap for now.

Man I hate telling people numbers.
I assume you are talking 67-72 era trucks?
There are too many chances to make mistakes.
I normally tell people to "measure their truck themselves",... but here goes.

I went to Boss' website.
The wheels are actually 22x9, (not 9.5" wide).
That 1/2" may not seem like much,... but I almost waste $1k by ordering the wrong BS wheels myself.
(at $500 per wheel) you have to measure!

These wheels come in 5.75" BS and 6.25" BS.
For static dropped trucks I would go with the 5.75" BS all the way around.
You will need a spacer (at least 1" or more),... to move the rear wheels out a little since the "track width" is narrower in the rear.

If you are bagging it,... I would run the 6.25" BS wheels just up front to tuck them in a little more.

Again,... I like the wheels tucked under the fenders.
You can measure the wheels yourself,... just remember a 9" wide wheel will actually measure 10" from outside edge-to-outside edge.

Re: Wheel and tire fitment...

Thanks man, I know youre always busy on here, and I thank you for that. The truck in question is a 72 cheyenne. I figured Id ask you because youre one of the most knowledgeable people on the site, and could help me figure this out. I too like the look of the wheels tucking and was one of the reasons why I was asking. I didnt want them to look funny or not fit right. If the rear needs bigger tubs that is ok. So just to make sure I got this, for the front Ill want the 6.25(because they'll tuck better?) and the 5.75 for the rear on a 22x9?

That's what I would buy if it was my truck.
