Need fuel : 235 question
my 54 235 thats in my 49 GMC Panel will run. I have a witness (Sillyoldman)
Silly and I got it to run for a bit till it emtied the bowl. The funny thing is it has a new fuel pump that seems to pump (by hand) But its not getting up the line and to the carb. Maybe a bad one ,not enough pressure ? Ideas ? Also it has a car pump instead of a truck pump, differance ? thanks in advance

Re: Need fuel : 235 question
You might be vapor locking. It happen to me several time and I went to a high pressure electric pump and the problem went away.

Re: Need fuel : 235 question
The fuel never made it up to the filter bowl. Nonhog primed everything then we filled the carb & filter bowl. It ran great until it starved out. The pump runs off lobe. I'm guessing the lobe is not pushing the pump arm enough to function. Anyone know if that motor had two differend lobe sizes or fuel pumps? Side by side the new & original appear to be a good match. Help?

Re: Need fuel : 235 question
This is from the shop manual for a '55 chevy pickup with a 235 (same pump). These are instructions for reassembling the fuel pump. Check out number six...
http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...5ctsm06m32.htm Here's the beginning of the section on the fuel pump. Keep clicking "next page" at the bottom to go through the entire fuel pump section in the manual... http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...5ctsm06m29.htm And not for nothing, but it took three fuel pumps from Napa before I got a good one. Where's yours from?

Re: Need fuel : 235 question
Maybe I should not install it upside down ? Maybe that would help.
Thats what I get for working in the dark. Hope thats it !

Re: Need fuel : 235 question
Yeah, let us know. Video may be in order. I'm crawling under the Buick now that the garage is warm and before I get too comfortable.
Nonhog, your secret is safe with me.

If I were you, I'd take it back to NAPA. Should be guaranteed for a year. Maybe there was a bad batch?

Re: Need fuel : 235 question
Run the inlet out of a can. You may have a clogged line

So putting the pump on correctly and after I fixed my massive fuel leak It runs but revs pretty high. I did drive it a little to position it better, looks a little more parked a little less abandoned.

Re: Need fuel : 235 question
I changed the pump on my 235 a few years ago and had a similar problem. When I finally took the line off and ran a wire through it, I pushed a mud dauber out of the line! It must have climbed in to make a next while I had it apart and the fumes killed it. It was enough of a clog that I couldn't get fule past him!
I also did a Jeep in HS that wouldn't run, I'd put the lines on backwards as well. Doesn't do much good. Truck looks great by the way. Nice wash job! Last edited by Dan Bowles; 01-10-2010 at 04:43 PM. |

Re: Need fuel : 235 question
Dude! You backed it up four feet and didn't call me? Whatever!
Does it run at idle?

Re: Need fuel : 235 question
Glad you solved the problem. I will admit to replacing a pump once and forgetting to put the rod back in, it got buried on the bench under a rag. I've also broke the ears on one trying to tighten it while the rod compressed the pump arm. Those little details are why I still review the process in my manuals, I too am getting a little senile.
