Spin-on Oil Filter Adapter ? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The spin-on oil filter adapter on my '66 chevy 327 is leaking like a sieve. It's was on the engine when I bought the truck. I believe it's a Mr Gasket brand. Rather than try and band-aid the leak, which is at the top of the adapter where it meets the block, I've decided to just replace it with a new one. I've seen several different styles. Is there one that's better than the other?

All I can offer is I had one that looked similar to the Transdapt-2 version shown above on a 283 in my 54 Chevy back in the 70's. Everything seemed to work fine for several months. One day I was a couple of blocks from home when I heard the engine knocking. I quickly looked at the oil pressure gauge and saw that it had dropped to zero as I pulled into the driveway.

I started checking over the engine and discovered the oil filter adapter had cracked causing the filter to loosen and fall off the engine. I was lucky, it only spun the rod bearings wiping out the crank. The block and main bearings were fine. I picked up a new crank, a set of bearings and put it back together - along with the original can style oil filter. That was my only - and last experience with an adapter.

I just had this problem a few weeks ago! First make sure that your block needs an adapter and not just a spin on mount. Mine had the adapter and didnt even need it! I replaced the cracked adapter with the spin on mount from summit and perfection, not a dip from the filter!
