Question whos done the serpintine conversion?

i am thinking about doing this mabey this summer on the new engine. i want to clean up the asscesories somehow, but i can't afford like billet brakets and pullies and stuff like march sells. so i think mabey i will convert it over to sepintene just for a differnent look. so.........

1. where is the best place to get the stuff, i need brakets and alt, powersteering pump and all the odds and ends to make it work.

2. how do i work the power steering pump into it, what i mean is, can a change my powersteering pump pully to a serpintine one or do i get a serpintine powersteering pump? if a get a new pump, how do i know if it will work with my steering box and hoses?

3. i don't have a compressor on it and i don't plan on fixing the a/c anytime soon. so can do the serpintine setup w/o the compressor and just use a shorter belt, or do i need some kind of idler pully setup to take the place of the compressor?

thanks for any help. if anyone has pics of this that would be great also.

okay, disregard my post. i was doing some researching and found that you have to use a reverse rotation water pump, and that its hard to locate non smog pump serpintine brakets, so i don't want to do it anymore.

I got the cast alum bracket set-up off of a late 80's, 4.3v-6, S-10 blazer @ a wrecking yard for 100$. It included the alt., pwr.steer pump, + a/c compressor & didn't have a smog pump. If you go looking & find one, be sure to get the vehicle vin# so you can look up the proper serpentine belt @ the parts house.

I haven't gotten around to installing it yet on my 74 though. I figure I'll do it right before a/c season hits 'cause it will require re-routing of the a/c lines. I can't believe you're in Texas w/a late model truck & don't have a/c

I was on the web looking for some brackets when I came across this site. They are selling complete used serpentine conversion kits for $200.00. You can fine them at Trans Am Creations All the parts are used but its a great start for someone who wants to do the conversion.

For a nonsmog option you need to get parts off a 94 or 95 Chevy. I already have mine. Yes the water pump is reverse but they not have the smog pump bracket which makes it look really cool. I bought all my brackets new from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/
Check ebay too. I see systems there all the time. Oh I have a setup like Jeff's if you're interested. Its a one piece bracket type made of steal. It does however have the smog pump bracket there.
Here is setup out of a S-10 Cyclone!!

Here is a post I put on the 88+ forum.

serpentine setups can come off of about anything. If you dont want the smog pump just dont bolt it on, as for your AC compressor problem, gm sells a pulley that bolts in place of the AC compressor (because of the design of the serpentine assembly you have to have some sort of pully upthere to hang the belt on. Anyway, i think they look cool. i got a set off ebay for 200 bucks, included all accessories and bolts.

as a side note my friend used a small block serpentine setup on his big-block and it looked great. had to fab some spacers and modify the brackets a little. but it looks great.

and i know the reverse rotation pump might be a problem, but i just spent 3 hours jacking around w/ my buddy's 86 ford 150 which had 4 separate belts and everything bolted to the waterpump. i'm certain that with two extra hours we could have swapped the long block as far as we had to take that sucker down :-)

anyway, the ac pully thing is about 25 from GM dealers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't the 88 and up SBC engines use a reverse rotation Waterpump and later on after like '95 don't they even use a serpentine belt? Couldn't we just use those parts for the conversion?

i'm not sure about any year swap... but if you use a serpentine belt, and the toothed side goes around the crank, and the smooth side around the waterpump pulley, then the pump has to be reverse rotation... makes sense right?

this post is a couple months old, i have since decided to go with an aftermarket march setup. the reason i wanted stuff off a non smog truck is that the smog pump bracket is built into some of the other brackets so its looks weird with this big open bracket with nothing in it, but the aftermarket setup eliminates all this stuff, so its no problem. but thanks for the info
