Front End Parts/Install

I'm in the process of putting my front end back together on my 71 GMC and It's been a while since I took it all a part. I am looking for info on upper& lower Control arm shafts. How tight do I make them? Do they need to be tack welded in place? Any one have the torque specs for this and the rest of the front end bolts and related items?
Thanks

Re: Front End Parts/Install

I have the 1972 Chevrolet Overhaul Service Manual for Cars & Light Duty Trucks book, which specifies 95 foot-lbs for the upper control arm bushings, and 130ft-lbs for the lower. I don't know if it is different for different years or not. I also don't know if GMC is different than Chevy.

If you can find a copy of the 1971 version of this book, it also lists all the torque specs for most of the parts.

Re: Front End Parts/Install

I've never heard of a need to tack weld them.
Did you guys replace your shafts or the nuts/bushings? or just replace the seals?
I am cleaning up my shafts and nuts on my 63, about ready to reassemble, and they look fine for re-use to me, but thats just using eyeball inspection. Should the shafts and nuts be replaced with new?

Re: Front End Parts/Install

I just put in all new because I had everything apart.
After 40 years who knows what you have.
My 2 cents.

Re: Front End Parts/Install

thats Normal Normy: you don't have your rubber bumpers in and you don't have any weight on it. Unless your going airborne with some radical driving, it will never be an issue, even without bumpers.

Re: Front End Parts/Install

Once you "load" the suspension all that will change, like stated in the previous post unless you get it airborne you will never be at that extreme angle.

Re: Front End Parts/Install

I should have said the weight is on the front wheels not the FRAME! but just the weight of the 5.3 only, is how it is sitting in picture 2&3
Thanks
