1960 Suburban Headliner

Anybody know, or can suggest what material to use in a 60 Burb ? the original headliner is a firm "cardboard" type silver material. I haven't seen it in any catalogs.

C'mon...all this knowledge on this board and not one response as to the type of material and/or location of headliner replacement for a 60 Burb ?

I am not aware of an aftermarket solution to this material. I have a few and it appears to be 1/8" masonite, painted to match the interior. I would check with a local automotive upholstery shop. This is not an off the shelf item, so you will have to check with the upholstery shops or suppliers that specialize in automotive upholstery supplies.

I stripped my roof & cleaned it, put in some butyl sound deadener and 1/2 foil insulation, and then screwed some 1X3s to the ribs. I then wrapped some Masonite with 1/4 inch foam followed with ceiling fabric, and used contact cement to hold it to the 1X3s. You have to keep fitting and cutting the edges of the Masonite to get lined up where you're happy with it, and be very careful when pressing the Masonite onto the 1X3s. I had precut some braces to add pressure to everything once I got it up. I had made the roof in 3 pieces, so there were a couple of seams-I used screws in those, to further hold everything up. Once everything was set, I took some 3/4 screen molding, tapered the ends, and then wrapped them in the same material. Using a brad/pin nailer, I then covered the seams. The only thing that shows, and not much, is where the pins left a bit of a dimple in the seam strips. I lost about an inch of headroom, but you'd have to be over 6 ft. to notice it.

Wow..nice job ! Thanks ! That process would also help out here in the hot summers.

It seems to me that the material in my Subs headliner is similar texturally to the perforated stuff that's used for suspended ceilings- I have yet to research this- but it may be a lead.

I haven't taken the inside apart yet, but does anybody know if the ribs that run across the top are bolted in and able to be removed and reinstalled ?

The original headliner material is much thinner that acoustical ceiling tile. ACT is 1/2" thick or better and comes in 2' x 2' or 2' x 4' pieces. It is not dimensionally stable enough to withstand high humidity and it is to brittle to fit the contour of the roof and it is too thick. Also, ACT is doesn't stay together very well and it's surface is not very durable. I don't suggest using this type of material.

I believe the support ribs are welded in. You can remove the upper pieces above the windows and have a look.
