Request help for a GMC jimmy restore project...

Hi, my name is Masaki, I'm from Peru, I want to start a project here, restore my old GMC jimmy, I just purchased this car from a friend (very cheap) but I have some question about this car...

first of all, don't have the original engine, the engine was replaced with a nissan LD28 diesel engine and gear box, but, my friend have in their garage the original 4x4 transmission with an linear 6 cilinder engine (chevy 250 L6), the problem is, in the front grill the car say 350, so, I presume, the original engine is a V8 350, is there any way to confirm this?

my second question, the suspension look like the original, the same with the axle, but I found that the front wheel have 6 nuts, and the rear 5 nuts, is this ok?

my other question... this is a convertible car with removable hard roof, but since this car is old the seals or where the roof contact the metal parts are not present, and I don't know about them, can anybody send me photos?

I read about a soft roof, is that an accesory? or is a standard part for this car?

here is the car actual condition...

PS:

Re: Request help for a GMC jimmy restore project...

good job your english really isnt that bad

as for your blazer, if you look at your vin tag it will tell you the year of your blazer and what engine it came with

it could have been the 6 cylinder engine, maybe the blazer just has a different grill

as for the rear axle it should have a 6 lug rear axle, but besides finding rims i do not think you will have any problems as long as both axles are geared the same, if not you will have problems with your 4 wheel drive

Welcome Masaki to the site..

Looks like you have a cool old Jimmy.

On the soft top, this is something that you buy as an accesory for Blazer/Jimmy. And take a look at LMC web site. They have a lot of parts for this thing.

Re: Request help for a GMC jimmy restore project...

It was available with a L6, so the one your friend has will work. I'm not sure if there is a difference between the L6 and V8 engine mounts. If you wanted a V8, you could use the same Transmission as the L6.

Re: Request help for a GMC jimmy restore project...

Not that I want to advise against putting a GM engine in your GMC truck, but what is wrong with the Nissan diesel engine?

I would think it would put out at least the same tourque as the GM L6 with twice the mileage?

Re: Request help for a GMC jimmy restore project...

I want to use the 4x4 option, but since the ld28 is with nissan transmission this is not possible, thats why I want the GM engine back, and about the specs..

Nissan LD28
89bhp 4600rpm
125lb.ft 2400rpm

GM L6 250
105 - 155 hp
Unknown lb.ft

Re: Request help for a GMC jimmy restore project...

Peru eh? I want to visit your country someday to see the Inca ruins and places like Puma Punka....

Your vin states she started life with a 350 small block...which is easy to find parts for across the globe. I was stationed in west germany many moons ago with a 69 chevelle and was able to find basic parts there.

5 nuts in the rear probably says you have a car 12 bolt for a rear axle...which is not the original axle. All 1/2 ton 4x4's had 6 lugs...3/4 and 1 ton had 8 lugs.

LMC truck offers free catalogs....at least here in the states...and one could almost build 80 percent or more of a K5 from the frame up with the parts they offer. As long as they ship to peru you have an excellant source.

Believe it or not...back in those days hard tops and passenger seats were all options...each option is designated by a gm RPO code that will be found in sticker form on the inside of the original glove box. Soft tops were offered thru the dealerships many years gone by. Currently the maker of said tops is out of buisness (Kayline) so you'll have to find one NOS on someones shelf or...ebay...this site...ck5 dot com...will be your best bet.

Enclosed are 2 color mattes i own that are airbrushed from gm...
The black and white is a 76 dealer photo...
And the blue decal is what you are looking for in the glove box...

3850817 is the block casting number. It was used from 1962 through 1978. It came in 230 and 250 cubic inch versions. It has a 3.875" diameter bore.
