I was installing upper and lower ball joints and while pulling the front hub apart, the axle pulled out of the front differential. I cannot get the axle to slide back into the differential. Is there anything that could have fallen down into the differential when I slid it out? Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it back in?

Which side? Is this a 1/2 3/4 or 1 ton? There should be a snapring on the end of the axle. Can you see any obstructions. Did the splines get damaged coming out? ect.

It is a 1 ton on the passenger side where the axle goes into the differential. When we took this out, we did not see any snapring.

There is a thrust washer inside the extension housing on the passenger side of those IFS differentials that will fall down and block the axle shaft from going back in. You have to remove the extension housing from the differential and put the washer back on the end of the axle shaft, and re-install the extension housing with the axle shaft as an assembly. I have seen this happen many times. The thrust washer is part of the center axle disconnect assembly. On the drivers side, you can pull the axle and shove it back in no problem.
