Divorced 205 transfer case ?'s
I just bought a divorced NP205 transfer(couldn't pass it up). It's out of a '63 chevy and seems to work fine. Give me some opinions on the pros and cons of the divorced unit. I was planning on keeping it to run behind a Th400 tranny. Also, What are these things going for in your area? No it's not for sale. Like I said I'm looking for PROS and CONS of the thing as this is the first one I found.

I have no personal experience with a divorced unit but I have friends that run them in both Dodge and Ford and they hate them. Nothing wrong with the 205 itself but they seem to have problem keeping the shaft between the tranny and the t-case. I don't know if they are loosing u-joints or what. I'll get more details and post back here tomorrow or the next day.

The divorced unit is a reasonable choice for a longbed truck. It will get the two driveshafts close to equal in length. As PONT noted, the stub shaft can be a problem. It will require a very good mount with zero deflection. But if you are making your own crossmember, you can locate it so that the stub shaft is of sufficient length and offset to not bind. Will require some detailed research on minimum u-joint angles (about 1 deg is needed and less than 5) and offset.

mkmiller, I talked with that friend of mine with a divorced 205 setup. His biggest problem is loosing joints on the "jack shaft" or "planetary shaft" or "stub shaft" or whatever you wanna call it. He told me that the guy with the 205 in the Ford keeps breaking the shaft itself. I guess he has a very healthy 429 in his ford and it's just too much power for the shaft. He's currently working on putting a married 205 setup in his Ford to see if it will hold-up any better.

I appreciate you checking for me. I'm not looking to go "too" big on the motor in anything I have. I'm really not sure what I'm going to do with the transfer yet, might save for trading stock or something.
