New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Hello, I'm a new member but not new to the site. I have viewed the site many times as a guest and figured it was about time to join.
My project is a 59 Chevy short fleet big window with camaro clip, 350, 700R4 auto OD. Purchased this way and currently "freshening it up". Last owner bondo'd the hell out of it. Any other Canadians here? Last edited by dewey777; 03-15-2010 at 10:15 PM. |

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Welcome from NW Washington. I'm not Canadian, but I have relatives up there, and I visit Burnaby BC regularly for training. There are lots from up that way though. Nice truck. Good luck with the freshening up.

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Thanks, I'll post more picks soon. Most of the bottom of cab has been replaced now. Rewired the truck and installing custom aluminum fuel tank under bed. New gauge assembly to install yet too. Think I'll cruise with the primer patch look this summer and paint next winter.

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Here are a few more pictures. The first are from the day I brought her home. The others are after the new cab corners were installed. Previous owner had at least 1/2" of bondo covering up a poor patch job. Looks much better now, no bondo whatsoever!

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Here are some more shots of replacing rotting metal. Pretty much the whole bottom 8" of the cab and doors have been replaced. Just need to finish welding step on passenger side in and install the step on drivers side. Drivers front cab corner already done.
Shots are taken in my friend's shop. Awesome set up including a hoist he just purchased and in the process of putting together. No more laying on our backs!!! That's his 71 in the background. Can you believe that my truck (former BC truck) has to have all the cab body work done to pass out of province inspection and he can drive Fred Flintstone style? What's up with that????

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Welcome fellow canuck. The out of province inspection is crazy stuff eh!! I found the same with a 500 $ junker I bought. Too much to pass inspection (2500 bucks to fix) so it went to the wreckers. I'd normally make a joke about you living in Dead Rear but you've heard that one before. LOL Welcome

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Nah. Don't do it. We have the same inspection rules here too. Kinda takes the fun out of it. At least you will end up with a quality machine when your done.

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Ah, but it was last registered in BC, so only a mechanical inspection should be required. At least that's how it works here.
No plans to move to BC, it's nice but way to expensive to live there!

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Yup probably just a mechanical inspection. Count on a major mechanical inspection though. Some of the things they find that you need to fix will be seem strange. Be prepared for a surprise. Nitpicky stuff. Living in BC is the same cost as in Alberta. I lived in Rocky for 35 years.
My gas bill is the same. Power is half as much. Car insurance is double. House insurance is half. Food costs less. It all evens out. |

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Thought I would post a couple of pictures of my friends hoist in action. Just got it going last night.
Should I be moving this post into another forum? It's pretty much a build forum now. If so does anyone know how to move it there? Or do I start a new one?

Re: New from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada
Things have been moving slowly, too slowly. brought the truck home for the summer from my friends shop thinking I would get more done when I could just go out in the garage whenever I could. 3 young kids make working on a hobby nearly impossible!
Managed to finish up the sheet metal patching and spray bomb prime the areas worked and got the fuel tank mounted under the bed. Still need to plumb the fuel fill line. Winter has come and I decided that I am tired of scraping windows and getting in my cold daily driver. The 59 has been moved to storage for the remainder of the winter. Kids activities have basically taken over any spare time I had available. Plan is to bring it home in March and devote a couple of weeks to finish everything required to finally take it in for it's out of province inspection and hopefully get it on the road for the summer. I think I will just drive the wheels off it this summer in it's "shop truck primer" state, maybe even splash a logo on the door. It's been 4 years since I purchased this "road ready until I had to get out of province inspection" truck and it hasn't made more than 50kms on the road (in transit sticker). I will post a few pics from the garage just before it was trailered to storage shortly
