whats a good aircleaner to compliment the old Mickey Thompson finned valvecovers?

We always ran the open element type back in the 70's, or the stock air filter with the lid flipped over for the guys that didn't have much money.

I think this looks good on your era truck, you could paint it, polish it, pinstripe the heck out of it...You live like 10min from me.

I would check out a Speedway Motors catalog or go to .com. They have a bunch of hot rod styled parts.

I'd go with the standard open element filter now, but back in the 70's the dome shaped open foam element filters were very popular. There's a velocity stack version on eBay right now for a visual example, although most guys I knew that ran one had the large version without the stack.

The downside is if water got in the engine compartment it went right in the carburetor, and a backfire could toast the foam dropping junk in the engine.

I tried one of the early Cal Custom air scoops, which really had no filtration at all, just 3 pieces of screen door screen to keep out nuts and bolts.



I also tried the velocity stack idea with an Eelco or Cal Custom air cleaner on top of a Holley 650 double pumper.



I saw a few of the Corvette air cleaners around. The small 2x4 versions looked the best, but the bigger full size version would certainly filter more air. They were very shallow, appeared to be full aluminum with louvers all around the perimeter. Reproductions are now available at great cost:

After the days of early experimentation I've always run a conventional open filter element, which I think looks great with the M/T valve covers.

i was just talking about using the caddy style aircleaner with my father-in-law this afternoon. i was thinking maybe black with pinstripes. where abouts are you located?

Thanks, The last time I drove it around here was a few years ago. I have been slowly working on it for a while now. I too hope to have mine on the road sometime this spring. Lets meet up sometime soon.

All I am finding now are $250 "resto" versions, but I know there are cheap ones.





I am boring, and running a 80's factory set-up.

To go with those M/T valve covers, I think the plain 14" chrome or the velocity stack type air cleaner would be best.
