POWR LOK Install
Do any of you differential gurus know if it is possible to open a D-60 pull the open carrier out, swap the ring gear to a POWR LOK, and then install the POWR LOK without having to setup the ring and pinion again?

The pinion depth will not have to be changed, you will however have to set up the backlash.

The diff bearings are pressed onto the carrier and the shims are inbetween the bearing & carrier so...no. Even if you pulled the bearings and used the same shims that would only get the alignment close but most likely not right.

As long as you are willing to "work with it"....it can be done.
First you need to measure the backlash before you take it apart. It absolutely has to go back to that same measurement, even if it is slightly out of spec from natural wear. You cannot "tighen it up" or it will fail. A magnet mounted dial indicator is the way to go with this. Burt4x4 is correct, the shims are under the bearings, so if you measure it first and are willing to press the bearings off and on a few times.....yes. It is probably a good idea to get a few extra shims before you start, you may need more than the original had. Also take the extra precaution to use a good synthetic gear lube when you put it back together. It's cheap insurance.

this is how i do danas. for each series of axles i have a set of bearings that have been "honed out". that way i can set up the axle just like i want & then remove setup bearings & press the "run" bearings on with the shim pack right on. to pull the side bearings off no matter how carefull you are your going to get on the cages some & that can destroy the bearing. the dana serv books have a rather complcated install procedure that "estmates" what the initial set up shim pack to run shim pack will be, but it never worked out to my satisfaction so i do it the trial & error way. you also need to spread the case some when removing / installing as the "crush" on the case is what sets the preload on the side bearings. not trying to scare you but want to see you get it right the 1st time so it will run & dont give problems. you will luv a powerlock. another thing: some power locks have lefthand threads on the case bolts so if you disissemble it for re clutch or whatever be carefull. good luck!
