hub question

I know that the answer to this question is probably posted somewhere but I havent been able to come up with a for sure answer yet. I am putting a 205 transfer case into a rolling frame that was all time 4wd. I want this truck to be streatable as possible so I was hoping to be able to use 2wd. I was wondering if I had to swap the hubs from truck to truck and if so what that all involves. I found a thread that sort of explained this but I still didnt know for sure. I would think I would need to use the manual locking hubs but I dont know that answer for sure. Thanks in advace.

Re: hub question

What truck was all time 4wd? What axles are we talking about here, with what type of hubs (auto lock?)? Swapping them is ez as pie. I think 6 allen screw and a couple snap rings (one on the axle shaft and one on the outside of the hub assembly) a seal pick usually works for the outer snap ring, and for the one on the axle shaft, use snap ring pliers or a small tipped set of needle nose pliers. Might as well check you bearings while your in there.. You might need some guidance for that as well though.

Re: hub question

I am parting out a wrecked blazer, dont know what year but it is somewhere around an 83 the junkyard thought. the blazer axles I want to put the hubs into along with the transfer case is a 76 and it had the 203 transfer case and the hubs just had a crome cap on them. I got the snap ring off of the inside of the hub on the shaft but everything is covered in grease and my lighting wasnt the best so I called it a night. What am I missing that is keeping the hub from coming out? Is there some kind of spanner wrench or something?

Re: hub question

Heres a picture of what all is in there. http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/dt...ocking_hub.gif
Just like what Eturnit3 said their are two snap rings the first one (#7) is locked into the hub itself, pull it out of there and everything will come out up untill the second snap ring (#10) it is locked onto the inner axle shaft itself, pull it off and everything else that you need should come out. When you put it back together use some red high heat grease I prefer "mystic", pack everything in the hub but the lock out itself it will hurt it, lightly coat all the moving parts of the lockout though. On a side note you should look at some of these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mile-...Q5fAccessories they are pretty cheap and they are what I got for my truck and I like them a lot, they are a way simpler design and the dial spins really smooth not to mention they aren't 25+ years old.

Re: hub question

After the locking hub assembly is out you will need a 4 prong spaner socket to remove the bearing retainers. If I remember right the outer one is keyed to the spindle and has an inward facing pin that locks the inner that is threaded on the spindle and needs the spanner socket. You will need to make a wire pick with the tip bent about 3/16" to work out the outer one. The inner has a bunch of holes, after packing the bearing tighten it to the point there is no slack and it starts to tighten up. Back it off so the closest hole aligns with the outer pin, usually about 10-15 degrees or 1/16 turn. Check to make sure there is no bearing slop.

Re: hub question

Yep what Orrie said, I forgot to mention you will need a spanner socket to get the bearings out and grease them.
