Re: Serpentine conversion
You don't need any special tools. You just need the serp set up and a reverse rotation water pump. There are a couple threaded holes that aren't in the older heads, they aren't necessary though. You will probably want to grab all the hardware while you are at it.
I'm in the process of converting to a serp set up on my crew.

Re: Serpentine conversion
I just got back from the pick-n-pull and grabbed the other side I needed. When I eventually become a paying member, I will put an ad out for it.
You can get them from 88-92 v8 camaro's and trans-am... worked great on my BBC with a little modification, otherwise a bolt on for SBC clint

SatisTraction- Please don't turn this in to a WTB, For sale thread. If you have an item that might be of interest, post it in the Classified Forum and offer a link...

Re: Serpentine conversion
Mine are off a Blazer. The brackets are spaced closer at the top. Any 93-95 truck brackets bolt on. Truck brackets don't have a provision for a smog pump.

Re: Serpentine conversion
The only "special" tools you'll need are some Torx bits for some of the fasteners. I believe its a T-45 for the bracket bolts on the heads and block.

Re: Serpentine conversion
Neither my '89 burb serp set up, nor a '95 c1500 I helped tear down had any torx bolts....what year and model did you encounter torx bolts?

Re: Serpentine conversion
I have run across these in a '92 Buick Roadmaster, '89 Chevy Caprice, and several 88 up Camaro's and Firebird's. Maybe the truck set ups did away with the Torx headed bolts?

Re: Serpentine conversion
I got my set up off a 92 S-10 4.2. A guy was parting one out and I paid
50.00. I got it all not just the brackets but the pumps(steering and water), compressor and alternator. I have had the brackets powder coated he alternator rebuilt and just have the steering pump and AC compressor to go through.

Re: Serpentine conversion
The water pump is different? I am parting out a 1989 suburban and I took the serpentine set-up off it. I am going to put it on my 1986 C-10.
Just wondering if waterpump is different between the two? Thanks. |

Re: Serpentine conversion
The water pump is reverse rotation because of the belt routing.

Re: Serpentine conversion
You can use the stock balancer with the serpentine pulley.

Re: Serpentine conversion
Yes. The alternator and A/C compressor stay on the same side as stock. If you use the 93-95 brackets, the compressor and alternator are reversed.

Re: Serpentine conversion
stick with the v belts. serpentine really dont look that much better cause they're still ugly but at least with the v belt if your on a trip and your compressor goes out or your p/s pump goes out you can stick a smaller belt on and bypass those systems entirely, infact i keep extra smaller belts along with the regulars just for that.
