Transfer Case Tranny Ident.
I posted this to the 4x4 board but didn't get any replies.
I have a GM transfer case and transmission that I need help identifying. The transfer case is cast iron and has G-99404 cast # on the back side. It's date coded 6-25-79. It has a steel removable cover plate on the side below the rear output shaft. The front out put shaft has a yoke but the rear is just a splined shaft. The transmission is a 4 speed with L-1-2-3 and R. It has a removable cover plate on the right side. A freind gave it to me a good while ago and said it was an old 1 ton set-up. Any ideas to it's original appplication, interchangability or if it's even worth the space it takes up in my garage to keep it around?

Since the tcase is loose, you should be able to read the data plate and it will give you the model number on there.
You said it has a front yoke but a rear slipyoke. Also, you said the datecode is 79. This leads me to belive that the transfercase you have is a 1980 Chevy NP205. 1980 was the only year the rear slipyoke was used. Desirable? No, no one really wants a slipyoke 205. You can get a fixed yoke from another 205 and put it another but if you have another 205, you wouldn't need to fix this one. The transmission it is mated to is a SM465, sometimes called a CH465 or a 117MM. It is a nice low-geared (6.54 for low) tranny that is widely available and not worth a lot of money. I do not doubt that it is indeed from a 1 ton 4x4, 1980 model year. -- Mike

Flipped the transfer case over and couldn't find any ID plate. I'll hold onto the transmission for now but I may as well load the transfer case on the truck and dump it off at the nearest junkyard?

is it a slip yoke or did someone just remove the fixed yoke exposing the splines?
If its mated to a manual trans, its more likely than not a np205. Its definately not junk, dont drop it off at the junkyard! Its worth anywhere from 50-250 bucks to the right person if its in good working shape. Even with the slipyoke, if someone needs a replacement for their slipyoke np205. you know what I mean? both that trans and t-case are fairly desireable and I wouldnt be giving them away to just anyone... check out this website for some pics to help you identify: http://www.boyceequipment.com/tranies.html the first pics on top is what your transfer case should look like. its a slip yoke np205... mike |

Yea, it looks just like that one. I've been shuffling it and the transmission around the garage to move it out of my way for too long but always felt someone would someday have a use for it. Oh well, guess I'll just haul it upstairs with the rest of the junk that I'll probably never use.

Climbed under my 82 with a 4 speed (117mm?) and found my transfer case is made of aluminum. What a weak link.
